With all the bold eye makeup looks that caught our eye in 2019, it makes sense to end the year paying tribute to the best ones. And it just so happens that statement liner, eyeshadow, and lashes can be the coolest complement to your holiday party dress.
No other accessory (think shoes, a handbag, or, that other major 2019 beauty trend, a hair accessory) can quite compete with the versatility of bold eye makeup. Add pink eyeshadow to offer your look a dose of sweetness, or a glossy finish for a ‘gram starlet upgrade. Test out your eyeliner skills with a new shape that can give your look an edge or a far-out 60s feel. Prefer a look more subtle? Dreamy, understated French girl eyes also happen to be au courant.

Trend #1: Pink Eyeshadow

Makeup artist Jo Baker quickly became a household name—well, at least for us beauty-obsessors—with the captivating looks she created for Lucy Boynton. The looks feature lengthy lashes, Crayola-bright shadow, and stark lines inspired by flowers, fishtails, and even telephone wires (as she explains on her Instagram page) and were so enchanting, they arguably helped Boynton achieve Hollywood Golden Girl status. Baker has used pink eyeshadow on Boynton for many of her winning looks, and we’ve also seen the colour on the eyelids of celebs like Yara Shahidi, Lady Gaga, and Kylie Jenner. “This is a great trend because it really brings focus to the eyes,” says Chu. “A pink eyeshadow will pretty much contrast with all eye colours.”
Get the Look:
“The main thing about achieving this look is to make sure you blend,” says Chu. She recommends using a blending brush so you don’t see any hard edges. Whether you use a matte pink or a shimmery pink shadow, blend it seamlessly outwards to make the eye ethereal looking, says Chu.

Trend #2: Glossy Lids

Wet, patent, lacquered-looking lids in colours like purple and rust have been seen on everyone from Kim Kardashian to Rihanna. Our favourite rendition? The smoky glossy eye, as illustrated by makeup artist Lisa Eldridge. This trend offers a dramatic, sultry look, says Chu. While the traditional smoky eye is edgy and classic, a glassy finish can keep the look modern.

“Wait until the last minute to add the glass finish on top of your eyelids to ensure the look will last as long as possible without running,” says Chu.

Consider yourself an eyeliner wiz? You may be especially inclined to give this trend a whirl. Experiment with your pencil by creating over-the-lash-line lines and open-ended flicks, as illustrated by makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes. “The open-ended eyeliner allows you to elongate the eyes without closing them up and keeping it light feeling,” says Chu. “It’s quite simple to achieve, as it requires only two strokes.”
Get the Look:
“Don’t try to create this lined look in one swift move as it is almost impossible to do,” says Chu. The key to creating smooth, even lines is by using small strokes. “If you don’t get it correct the first or even second time, use a cotton swab with eye makeup remover to help refine your shape and create the perfect pointed tip,” says Chu.

Trend #4: 60s Vibes

We can probably point the finger at Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, featuring Margot Robbie as ultimate 60s style icon Sharon Tate, for this trend. It only makes sense, then, that makeup artist Pati Dubroff was inspired by Tate to create this look for Robbie. “This 60s eyeliner look is such a great way to add a soft yet dramatic flair to the eye,” says Chu. “It also helps to bulk up the lash line and create a larger eye dimension look.”
Get the Look:
“Use a really black gel eyeliner with an eyeliner brush to run the entire eye with a medium-thick line,” says Chu. Then, go over it with a black eyeshadow powder to create a softer look and help it last all night.

Trend #5: Le French Look

French makeup artist Violette has made us all (even more than before) obsessed with mimicking French beauty looks. Why? “There’s something extremely chic about the French girl look,” says Chu. “It’s effortlessly classic.” Take this dreamy, barely-there look, for example. Matte, taupey eyeshadow paired with a touch of mascara offers a fuss-free look that’s super sexy.
Get the Look:
Keep it monochromatic, says Chu. Reach for a soft, neutral eyeshadow colour. “Make sure that everything is blended out, as if you used your fingers to apply it,” says Chu. Want to elevate the look? This eye pairs perfectly with a bold red lip stain.
