Your Perfect Eyebrow

A general rule of thumb when it comes to flattering your arches is that light-haired women should darken them and dark-haired women should lighten them. “If you have light skin, light eyes and light hair, you’re dealing with an absence of definition, so you usually want to darken your brows and lash line,” says Maribeth Madron, global brow expert for Maybelline New York.

Brows for Dark-Haired Beauties

If you have all-dark features, a softened, highlighted brow is best for showing off your deep, sultry eyes. “It’s all about making sure that you have definition, but you don’t want two features competing with each other,” she says.

Redheads should look to brow formulas with ashy, taupe undertones so they won’t turn orange against their complexions.

Flawless Brows At Any Age

For aging brows that have seen some overwaxing or plucking over the years, Madron suggests hair and nail growth vitamins and a regular brow conditioner to help maintain fuller-looking hair. “As we age, the space between our ‘anchors’ grows, so it’s important to never remove hairs from the corner of your brow, which can make you look 10 years older,” she says.

When your eyes begin to droop a little in the outer corners, taking a few hairs off the tail of your brow can give you an instant lift. “Removing the peach fuzz from the top and bottom of your brow area also allows your bare skin to reflect more light, which will give your whole eye area a lifted look,” she says.

For flawless brows at any age, use Lise Watier Double Perfection Lift & Fill Eyebrow Duo in Châtain ($33 at or Shopper’s Drug Mart) or Benefit Cosmetics Grooming Tweezer & Brush ($26 at

Silver Brows

Grey hairs may start to pop up in your forties, but Madron warns against plucking them, since they’re coarser and will leave behind an obvious gape. Instead, brush them up and trim to match the rest of your hair and use a brow gel or pomade to keep them in place. To help blend in the colour, use a pencil followed by powder for finer hair, or a tinted brow mascara for more unruly textures. Greys tend to be resistant to standard tinting, but if you want to give it a try, definitely seek a pro’s advice.
