Rio 2016: 8 Ways To Support Canada’s Olympians
If you can’t make it to Rio, we’ve rounded up some fun ways to show your spirit as over 300 athletes head south to the Games.
Team Canada Collection
The Hudson's Bay Company is once again the official outfitter for Team Canada. Canadian designers Dan and Dean Caten of Dsquared2 designed many of the select pieces that are part of the replica line at HBC. The Para Flip-Flops directly support the athletes with 30 percent of the $15 purchase going to Paralympic athletes and programs for aspiring athletes. Many of these pieces help fund initiatives such as the HBC Athlete Bursary program that awards 50 Canadian athletes $10,000 a year, for the next four years. Priced from $15-$150, thebay.com
Visit Olympic Park
Built for the 1976 Montreal games, Parc Olympique de Montreal is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Running for the entire summer, the park will present Memories of 1976, an exhibit that will take place over three sites, highlight the games of '76.
Be part of what is being called the 'most social Games ever' by adding #TeamCanada to your favourite social-media channels. Or download the "Canada Cheers" app to receive a tweet when the Canadian Olympic Club sends a message following a major event; then re-tweet the news using #GiveYourEverythingCanada. Also, Air Canada, the official airline of Team Canada that transports athletes to the games, is inviting Canadians to use #FlyTheFlag to follow and support the athletes.
Stock-up on drugstore staples
This summer, Procter & Gamble and the Canadian Olympic Foundation have teamed up to help support aspiring Olympians and their families. By simply purchasing some of your drugstore necessities, including Crest toothpaste, Pantene shampoo, Olay body wash, Tampax tampons and Gillette Venus razors, you could help an athlete's Olympic dream. P&G will donate the value of 50 Shoppers Optimum Points, per purchase, to the COF. Available at Shoppers Drug Mart from July 16 to August 12.
