We already know some foods can boost our moods‘but can they be as effective as a prescription drug?

According to a new study, yes.

The study, which compared chemical structures of more than 1,700 food flavors to approved antidepressants, found that commonly used flavours are structurally similar to prescription mood drugs.

"Molecules in chocolate, a variety of berries and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids have shown positive effects on mood. In turn, our studies show that some commonly used flavor components are structurally similar to valproic acid," Karina Martinez-Mayorga, Ph.D., leader of a research team that has been studying the effects of flavors on mood told Science Daily.

So, what should we eat for a mood boost?

‘Chemicals in chocolate, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, teas and certain foods could well be mood-enhancers,’ said Martinez-Mayorga.

While I wouldn’t complain if I were prescribed a big dose of chocolate, this study doesn’t mean prescription drugs can be replaced by food’rather that eating certain foods can provide a mood boost.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to make this Chocolate Pudding. Happy eating (literally)!
