I attended the launch this morning of a new tote bag being sold at H&M ($12.95, pictured above) as a fundraiser for UNICEF’s Kenya Girls Scholarship Programme. The bag is available in select stores starting today, and 25 percent of each sale goes to the program.

The bag was designed by H&M sales associate Steven Pham, as part of a competition among H&M staff across the country, and is made of organic cotton. It’s a super cute way to show your colours in support of UNICEF programs.

The Kenya Girls Scholarship Programme is a good one’it helps girls from rural and nomadic communities in northeastern Kenya attend high school through a scholarship program. And if you read the August 23 issue of the New York Times Magazine (or even if you’re just up on the issues), you’ll know that investments in girls’ education have huge dividends for their communities.

And if you don’t have an H&M nearby or just don’t need another tote bag, you can also donate directly to the Kenya Girls Scholarship Programme. Consider doing it via Canadian group Girl Impact, which has brought together 12 Canadian girls to learn about leadership and raise funds to send 10 Kenyan girls to high school. The Girl Impact girls will be travelling to Kenya in just a few weeks to meet their counterparts’after which they’re climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro!’and they could use support from all of us for this fantastic project.
