Good news: popcorn is a whole grain. Furthermore, popcorn eaters eat more whole grains and dietary fibre overall than non-popcorn eaters, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

(Okay, the study was funded by a popcorn manufacturer, but the peer-reviewed journal makes it legit. The research was conducted by Ann C. Grandjean and her colleagues at The Center for Human Nutrition in Omaha.)

But before you go kernal crazy: remember to enjoy your popcorn unbuttered and unsalted. Also, when choosing popcorn at the grocery store, select a brand with fewer than 0.5 grams of trans fat listed on the nutrition label, such as Newman’s Own or Orville Redenbacher SmartPop. Now get popping!
