  1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook the bacon for 5 minutes, until lightly browned. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, until the onion is soft.
  2. Add the cabbage, apples and 1/4 cup (60 ml) water to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes, until the cabbage is soft.
  3. Stir in the vinegar and sugar. Season with salt and pepper, and serve warm.
Recipe Notes

Variation: This salad also works with green cabbage, or a mixture of red and green cabbage. For a different flavour, add 1 teaspoon caraway seeds with the onion
