I’m really excited to be taking part in this weekend’s Savour Stratford culinary events, for which Best Health is a sponsor. On Saturday is the Chef Challenge, where I’ll be one of four judges along with Chuck Hughes (pictured) of Chuck’s Day Off fame, author Jennifer McLagan and chef Nick Benninger.
Stratford, located on the Avon River in the pretty hills of southwestern Ontario, proclaims to be "Canada’s Premier Art Town." And you can’t argue with that. Now, its Savour Stratford food event is also putting it on the map.
It all starts with the opening ceremonies at breakfast time on Saturday, when chef and teacher Paul Finkelstein (pictured below), whom is a regular contributor to Best Health magazine hosts a "Pass it On" style cook-off. "Twelve families will join us at different stations to prepare the recipe at one time," Paul explains. "It’s controlled madness intended to drive home the importance of families cooking together and sharing the experience. By involving your child they’re not only developing skills, but also taking ownership over what they eat." As a strong proponent of getting families into the kitchen to cook and to the table to share the meal, says Paul, "I feel it is these experiences that give everyone that attends Savour Stratford an appetite for delicious food prepared with local ingredients."
That’s just a taste of things to come; there are so many different things to do in Stratford during this award-winning weekend-long event, including learning knife skills, how to preserve, "beerology," not to mention wine-tastings and music. (Plus, I’m glad to be able to share copies of our latest issue of Best Health with many visitors.)
As Paul says, "This is a great city and awesome people coming together to celebrate some of the best food Canada has to offer. There’s no other place I’d rather be this weekend!" I couldn’t have said it better. See you there!
