In my mind, Jane Fonda is a feminist trailblazer on par with the likes of Gloria Steinem. Now hear me out: Not only was she one of the first actresses to publicly take a political stand (and may be the only woman to ever look poised in her mugshot), but she also brought fitness into the spotlight at a time when women were only just starting to become conscious about their own health.
Say what you will about Fonda’s workout style (and those Spandex leggings), her 1982 workout video made exercise accessible to women who couldn’t get to the gym because of household duties.
Now, the 72-year-old icon is blazing a new trail. The mother of at-home fitness is planning to release yet another workout video in 2011’this one aimed at babyboomers, the Telegraph UK reports.
Those who follow Fonda’s life might know that she’s now mostly made up of titanium and silicone. Because she suffers from osteoarthritis, she’s had a hip replacement and knee surgery. But in a world that values youth above all else, Fonda (who is also open about her plastic surgery) is shining a light on the fitness needs of older women. That’s a brave move in my books.
Now the big question is: What should she wear in the new video?
