Quenching your thirst with some so-called “healthy” drinks can deliver a very unhealthy calorie and sugar wollop.
Glaceau VitaminWater, for example, serves up 130 calories and 33 grams of sugar in a 20-ounce bottle. Minute Maid Lemonade offers 250 liquid calories and 68 grams of sugar. A Baskin-Robbins Pomegranate Banana Fruit Blast Smoothie (32 oz) lets you slurp up 1,020 calories and 232 grams of sugar. These are just a few of the revelations from Men’s Health.
If you want to slake a thirst without calories, Vancouver registered dietitian Ramona Josephson recommends water or club soda (jazz it up with lime, lemon or orange slices), clear tea or chilled herbal tea, and black coffee (flavoured or regular). Get more of her advice in our summer-slim meal plan.
