Kristin Davis opens up about female hair loss
In a candid Instagram post, Sex & The City actress Kristin Davis confesses that she felt like her hair disappeared overnight. And what was left of her hair was “thin and super damaged.”
Today, the 52-year-old is happy with her mane, thanks to Volaire hair volumizing products she credits to transforming her locks. As a global ambassador for Volaire, Davis opened up about her hair-loss journey in an exclusive interview with WDD.
“My hair just was not what it used to be,” she said. “It was very fine, like it had gone away. There just was hardly any hair there.”
The only way she was able to pull off the luscious Park Avenue-style look on Sex & the City was because of the set’s team of hair care professionals, Davis explains.
“I hadn’t been worrying about [the hair loss] – I have my daughter – but when I tried to do something or had to go somewhere I was like, ‘Where is my hair?’ ” she told WDD.
Female hair loss 101
Of course, Davis isn’t the only woman wondering where her hair went. In fact, female hair loss is more common than you might think, with 30 per cent of women over 40 suffering from hair loss. Meanwhile, 45 per cent of post-menopausal women experience hair loss, too, according Dr. Vincent Durosier in another Best Health article.
Aside from menopause, the most common culprits of female hair loss are stress, weight changes, nutritional deficiencies or thyroid problems.
And just like with any medical condition, women shouldn’t feel embarrassed for talking about losing their locks. There’s still a lot of stigma when it comes to female hair loss, which is why I’m so happy that Davis is bringing this subject into the spotlight.
If your hair is thinning out, don’t head to your hairstylist just yet. The first thing you need to do is talk to your family doctor, especially before starting any hair loss products or treatments.
