50s and fit

When financial manager Loredana Moretti hit her 40th birthday, she felt something had to change. After an overhaul with her diet and her fitness level, she’s now at 51 and a personal trainer. And she’s in love with strength training. “My goal was to stop feeling frumpy and move to being forever fit and feeling fabulous,” she says. For Moretti, her #BHmoment was finding passion in lifting weights. Why? It stopped the busy mom from feeling exhausted and unhappy with her appearance. “I was raising my young daughter who I knew was watching me so I had to be the example she could draw from later.” Here is her 50s and fit story:

How did you find a way to make a healthy lifestyle fit into your already busy life?
“I started by getting up before everyone else and use that time to start a training plan. I also used this time to prepare my food for the day. In six months, I dropped the weight I set out to lose so now I needed a new goal. This is what fitness is, a series of goals designed by you to create the body you want to live your life in. Each time you get really close to achieving one goal, you have to rekindle your excitement by setting another goal.  This keeps you going.

What exactly did you do?
“My initial training included cardio and light weight workouts. I really put my energy into mostly running at this time because fat loss was my major goal. Running is easy, free and can be done no matter where I am.
My diet changed as well. I no longer indulged in fast or convenience foods. If I did not prepare it, I could not have it, which is for the most part, the same philosophy I have today. I learned how amazing food is when prepared simple and clean. I taught myself to prepare foods that fuel and feed the body and that when I felt hungry, my body needs nutrients not calories.”

How did it change your mindset?
“I learned how powerful consistency and determination really are. You can do anything. If you can see it you can be it. I also learned how important balance is and that if you do not embark on a plan for the lifestyle you live, you may be doomed to yo-yo dieting forever.
I am definitely happier. […] When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

What’s the secret to your success you’d like to share?
“You have to stand up for your health and your dreams. You have to believe in yourself more than anyone else because at the end of the day, the only thing you control is you. I promise you two things: It will be hard but it will be worth it; and you are never too old.”

So, how is life 10 years later?
“To this day, I still get up at 4:30 a.m. and get ready to hit the gym, which I love – most days. By 7 a.m. I am so full of energy I feel like there is nothing I can’t do. But by 10 p.m., it’s a different story.”
