It may seem like the flu is unavoidable in the fall and winter months, but there are steps you can take to keep yourself and your family healthy this season. Here are seven ways to prevent the flu

Stay healthy this season

If you're determined to stay well this season, there are steps you can take to avoid getting and spreading the flu. The following seven steps have been provided by Health and Safety Watch and are adapted from information from Public Health Agency of Canada and the US Centers for Disease Control.

1. Get vaccinated

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year. Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) encourages all Canadians over age six months to get a flu shot. Vaccination is particularly important for those at higher risk of developing influenza related complications, and for health professionals to protect themselves and their patients.  Check with your local public health authority for vaccination clinic times and locations.

2. Protect your personal space

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

3. Take a sick day

If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

4. Cough and cover

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.

5. Keep 'em clean

Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.

7. Practice other good health habits

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.
