SWAP OUT: MINDLESS MUNCHING
SWAP IN: MINDFUL MEALS
You probably don’t remember what you scarfed down for dinner last night, much less how you felt while you were eating. Mindful eating is the opposite of that—it’s about avoiding distractions and tuning into your body’s signals about hunger and fullness.
Instead of inhaling your food while scrolling through your Insta feed, try focusing on what you’re eating and listening deeply to what your body needs. It’s not about spending five minutes contemplating each bite—nobody has time for that. It’s about taking the time to ask yourself questions like “Am I hungry?” and “Do I now feel full?” all while enjoying your food.
Eating mindfully helps reduce overeating, encourages good digestion, and can improve your relationship with food. All that, and you really don’t need to do anything—just sit down and eat, no criticism or judgements allowed. Easy, right?
SWAP OUT: HUNGRY MORNINGS
SWAP IN: HEALTHY BREAKFAST
Many of us find it hard to have breakfast in the morning, never mind a nutritious, mindful one. But a healthy meal to start your day will boost your energy and fuel you for hours.
Instead of skipping brekkie, choose something easy-to-make that you can finish at home or take with you to work. Yogurt is great on the go—ditch the high-sugar flavoured kinds and reach for high-protein plain Greek yogurt instead. For some nutritious extras—and to mix it up so you don’t get bored—mix in nuts, seeds or fruit. Bonus tip: If you find Greek yogurt too tart, stir in a mashed banana for a bit of sweetness.
Oatmeal is a nutritious breakfast, but who has the time? You do—if you take one minute to prep overnight oats the night before. Simply add milk, yogurt and large-flake oats to a mason jar or other container and you’ll have a creamy, filling breakfast in the a.m.
At the very least, eating a low-sugar energy bar and piece of fruit is a better way to start your day than, well, nothing.
