Demi Lovato’s controversial detox is raising some eyebrows. The singer (and role model to young girls) is under fire for promoting a laxative tea that health officials say could “irritate the colon and remove key nutrients from the bowels.”

Lovato posted one of her standard selfies on Tuesday. But instead of her usual no-makeup self-love, the singer reflected on how great she was feeling thanks to her Teami tea. She praised the 30-day detox for being easy—side note: is any detox ever easy?— and encouraged her 57 million Instagram followers to sign up and do the 30-day challenge with her.

Fans weren’t impressed, calling Lovato a “hypocrite” for supposedly supporting a healthy body image while simultaneously pushing a product that’s so clearly meant for weight loss.

We have to say: Knowing Lovato’s fans skew rather young, promoting a controversial health product like this might veer into irresponsible territory. Sure, they’re paying her (note the #sponsored hashtag) but we’re almost positive she isn’t in desperate need of the financial assistance.

There are a lot of health benefits that come with drinking teas (and herbal teas), but a tea detox is a whole different story. If you’re going to embark on a detox of any kind, it’s important to do it right, keeping your health and well-being a top priority.

Try incorporating herbs that will help you detox naturally (think milkthistle, turmeric and dandelion) or adding a detox tea to an already nutrient-filled diet. Kate Ross LeBlanc, co-founder of Saje Natural Wellness, suggests trying a tea that contains peppermint (an anti-inflammatory), lemon myrtle (a natural detoxifier) and chili (to boost your metabolism).
