Check your calories per day with our calorie calculator
Not sure how many calories you should be eating on a daily basis? Use our calorie calculator to find out

How many calories do you really need each day?
Your body needs a certain number of calories per day just to maintain essential body functions. If you go over that needed amount of energy each day and you're not very active, you'll eventually gain weight.
So how many calories should you ingest each day? That depends on your daily level of activity, gender, weight, height, and age. For instance, a 30-year-old woman who is very active needs a higher number of calories per day than a 40-year-old woman who is only moderately active.
Use our Daily Calorie Needs Calculator to figure out how many calories per day you need.

could you send me a recipe for one week for 1890 calories a day
thank you

Judy,
First thing you need to know is that 3500 calories = 1 pound of weight loss. I am aiming for a 2 pound loss a week therefore I need a deficit of 7000 calories. Second thing is to figure out you basal metabolic rate. Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories you'd burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating. You can calculate your BMR by filling out the calculator above and selecting sedentary for activity level. My BMR is just over 1750, so i consume around 1250 calories every day which is a 500 calorie deficit (1 pound loss a week) and exercise 500 calories every day to total 2 pounds a week. If you have a smart phone download the My Fitness Pal App to help calculate and keep track of calories. Hope this helps
That is the amount of calories to maintain my current weight, how many should I consume to lose 1.2 lbs per week. I am 60 years old and only lightly active at this point, mostly because of arthritis pain which should improve when I'm not carrying so much extra weight.
If I ate this many calories in a day I would be 200 pounds by next spring.
This is totally accurate. I teach Food and Nutrition in high school, and you people have obviously not heard of the Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating! You need the calories. It's not supposed to be about losing weight, but maintaining a healthy weight. You don't eliminate food (like Dr. B's) because when you reintroduce that food, you'll gain everything back!
It's about PORTION CONTROL ... most Canadians don't even know what 4oz of meat looks like! Geez! Educate yourself, people!!!
I totally disagree with the amount of calories stated for my size. I am doing good on less than 1200 and following Dr B's diet.
Why all the negativity! Wow lets have less negative comments.
This losing weight gaining weight thing drives me absolotley insane.....everyone wants to make it so difficult and scientific
There is a very basic and easy principle to it
YOU HAVE TO BURN OFF MORE THAN YOU TAKE IN OR TAKE IN MORE THAN YOU BURN OFF
It takes 3500 calories to make a pound or you need to burn 3500 calories to lose a pound so figure it out
Mind you do have to eat small amounts through the day to maintain metabolism, small amounts mean a piece of fruit a yogurt or something like that, not a small pizza or a small burger, but at the end of the day if you have burnt more than you took in you will loose weight
That being said remember the 3500 calorie thing,if you take in 6000 calories a day and burn off 2500 no its not going to work
I see a lot of people writing about calories. They vary so much for everyone. It depends on gender, and activity level as does weight loss.
If people are exercising like they should be, the amount of calories (close enough to accurate) won't make you gain weight. You may live a sedentary lifestyle and not each much, so if you started eating more, of course you are going to gain weight. If you exercise, your body NEEDS to take more in calorie wise. Healthy foods obviously. Man people are not very bright.
Mike, you really should learn some proper manners that's for sure. Comments such as yours have NO place here or anywhere except maybe your weekly poker get-together's...and I will tell YOU this...by inducing the calorie levels shown in the chart can and DOES in fact lower body weight and I've proven that time and time again. So before you shoot-off sarcastic comments do your homework. And have a nice day! :)
Your the idiot, your bloody git! Do you talk like this to your friends and co-workers every day if they happen to ask a silly question or say something you disagree with? Why don't you go and buy an etiquette quide on how to talk to people.!!!

You idiots! The caloric intake is what you need to ingest to maintain your current weight. It doesn't say anything about losing weight! Learn to read, losers. If you want to lose weight, obviously you need to take in less. For example, I'm 214 lbs. and have a sedentary job. If I want to lose weight (and I've already lost 25 lbs.) I need to take in about 1200 to 1500 calories a day, not the 2300 I'm supposed to take in to maintain my weight.

This is not talking about weight loss everyone its talking about maintance and it is right. Iam currently lossing weight right now at 2000 and my maintenace was 2486 witch was what this site says.. and nothing is 100% accuarte. i would say this is pretty accurate.
I have put on a few pounds - maybe 10 since taking medication. I think my caloric calculation should be slightly lower than shown. But I'm lucky, I just enjoy foods which happen to be healthy (sure I gorge once in a while, but not much). Considering I grew up in the U.K. a LONG time ago, where if you DID have a vegetable it was cooked to mush (things are very different there now). I gave up butter (which I love from the old days) completely, always cook with EVVO. Don't eat bread (just pita sometimes). Don't eat potatoes (which are good for you, but I can't eat them without slathering them with "stuff". I 'm not a cook to be sure, but sometimes I make a huge batch of brown rice, complete with canned salmon and lots of veggies - a tiny bit of low sodium soy sauce and cook in wok. So easy and just me, so can have for a few days.
I have been wanting to drop a mere 10 lbs for the longest time. I finally joined Weightwatchers online and for me it works! I've dropped 5 lbs this last month. The key (which seems to work for some people, including me) is that you get a number of "points" to consume each day based on height, age, weight, number of pounds needed to lose etc. The points are not evaluated on the basis of calories but by a combination of fats, protein, carbohydrate and fibre (given on the nutrition info on every packaged item of food you buy). Fruits and vegetables are assigned zero points. So guess what? I've increased my consumption of fruits and vegetables by triple maybe - very good news. The restrictions just push you in that healthy direction. You don't get hungry because you can fill up on fruits and vegetables. It's a beautiful system. Bottom line for me: any diet based on calorie consumption alone will not be effective and will leave you hungry. Since I hate being hungry and get headaches and nausea from being hungry, the Weightwatchers regime is tailor-made for me.
Zuba, I have gone on a Vegan diet. I have been on it since Jan 15, 2012. No fats, no oils. Dr. Esselstyn is a pervayor of this diet. I have lost 40 lbs. (340 to 300, still fat) and I have gone down 5 notches on my belt. If you follow this way of eating, you will lose fat. My cholesterol levels have been cut in half. My blood pressure is down substantially, and my type ll diabetes is almost under control. I have a long way to go and it is a difficult diet to stay on, but, it becomes much easier once you get beyond the 3 month period. Try different vegan recipes, but make sure you do not use fats. My stir fries are stir boils, just mad with veggies and water.
Good luck, if you try it.
LOL Just to re-iterate the last post...
"Your body needs a certain number of calories per day just to maintain essential body functions. If you go over that needed amount of energy each day and you're not very active, you'll eventually gain weight."
It's the first paragraph!!!! wow ... this was just sad! :(

I have tried everything but I am not losing any weight.please can u help me
Anyone can lose weight at the levels suggested!. One key is eating smaller portions at regular intervals of no more than 4 hours apart. You can also eat like a diabetic does. I lost 30# in 3 months by doing just that. So please, don't tell me low calorie diets don't work because they do!
How the hell am I supposed to eat 2469 calories a day? I can barely eat 1200 a day! hahaha wow.
The calculations are ridiculous! I could never lose weight on this number of calories per day. On 1200 calories I lose 1/2 to 1 pound per week only. I can't imagine the weight I would gain on 1849 per day.
What does NaN mean?
is this a joke?? how can you possibly no how many calories someone needs? ridicuous. if i ate 4000+ calories a day id be obese!! i eat about 2000+ calories & exercise everyday and have remianed the same size for about 6 years. This is wrong, do not pay attention.
I cannot lose weight on that amount of calories. I have been losing weight
on 1200 calories and being careful that those calories are from good food and not sweets or chips.

I can,t loose weight on that many calories
I am looking for a listing of healthy diet foods, however I want the best brandso I do not have to stand in the store and check sugar -salt-calories etc. I am a diabetic 2 and would like a listing of foods and a Monday -Sunday diet suggestion listing. This would save me lots of time. I attended 2 different diet consulting courses, and was very disapointed.I feel they are not willingto large companies and point out the unhealthy additives.
Fine but please try to make it easier for the people like meto shop quicker. How about a good listing or how about pusing the goverment to get these companies to qualify for a heart check, wieight check, diab. check, etc. They would make lots of money and the public would benefit heathwide.
