From pals who pull ghost-like vanishing acts when you need them most to friends who show up only when they need you, some friendships seem bewitched by bad behaviour. "Good friendships are vital to your health and emotional well-being," says author and New York University professor of psychiatry Irene S. Levine. "But when you fill your life with emotionally draining friends, you leave little room for healthier relationships."

Almost everyone has at least one needy or toxic friend—maybe you have an old pal you've outgrown but don't want to abandon, or you have hit a rocky patch with a newer one. Either way, these friends take a toll: "Toxic friendships increase your levels of stress and anxiety, and make you more susceptible to depression," says Levine. Yikes.
