Is this the future of birth control?

Any one of these contraception methods could soon be available in Canada. Here's the latest research on birth control

Contraceptive gel

Currently being studied in many countries, the gel is rubbed onto the abdomen daily to suppress ovulation, but doesn’t stop periods. It contains Nesterone, a new form of progestin that does not bind to androgen receptors, so it is less apt than the pill to cause side effects such as acne. It also contains estradiol, a natural form of estrogen. “We did a study and women loved this product,” says Merkatz. A study of thousands of women will be needed before this gel can go on the market.

Lynne I think you are mistaken. The majority of men would not have a problem taking a daily pill, because in most circumstances we are the ones that do not want children.

I was on the pill for 10 years and ended up with blood clots. Then when I got pregnant with my children I had to take 2 needles in the stomach every day. I think the pill is very dangerous.

I've been on birth control pills for almost 10 years straight. I've had numerous problems having to switch through 5 different brands to finally get one that worked without side effects. Now I have iron absorption problems which may be linked to using birth control pills. Currently, I am taking a break from using birth control pills in hopes of finding an answer for my iron deficiency. It's only been a couple days and I can feel my emotions are out of control.

I'd advise everyone to think carefully about the side effects of taking birth control pills and the side effects of not taking them to make an educated choice. As for me at this point I'd say bring on the birth control gel!

I was on the pill for about 8 years of my life. From the year 2000 to 2008. For me it was toxic, I had extreme side effects and it really ruined my life. I switched from brand to brand to find the right one and none of them were good. I went from being an easy going happy full of life person to someone who experienced extreme mood swings, debilitating depression, lack of sex drive to have no interest in my children or life. I took myself off the pill because I had to so i could become me again. If I could go back and change it by not taking the pill through those years I would. My kids were young then and I am saddenned that I missed out on enjoying a part of their life that I will never get back. But happy that now I am back to good old me again. I would not recommend any hormones to control birth control Taking hormones are not good for our bodies and whether it be a pill or a gell it is still the same thing. Another hormone to mess with our bodies, our natural feelings and our lives. Better to use condoms or just abstain. As with anything in life it is good to remember that no one pill fits for everyone. We are all different and not all of us can are capable of using these methods of birth control .

I was on the pill from 1974 until 2008, coming off twice to have children and taking different versions with diminishing levels of hormones over those years. I was fortunate and didn't have any side effects. It was a really great thing and wouldn't have tried anything else. The gel appeals to me as a contraceptive, the physical devices...not so much...I prefer something that acts like an on/off switch for my body. Plus you pop a pill and forget about it. As for the pill for men...it's my body that goes through the pregnancy...I'd rather be totally in control of what happens to it. Wouldn't want to leave it up to someone else to ensure that I didn't get pregnant. Not all men in all circumstances would be trustworthy. Not a form of protection for sex outside of committed relationships.
