Mentally, getting old isn't so bad. Physically, it seems like it's all downhill after 18. We lose flexibility, balance and strength – especially once we hit our 30s – and the aches and pains pop up out of nowhere.
Want an easy way to keep your body in top shape as the decades roll by? Yoga might be your answer. It's a low-impact way to strengthen and stretch and can be done anytime and just about anywhere. We asked Toronto yoga teacher Christine Felstead (our model for these photos) to guide us through some poses that will slow the aging process.
Ideally, do the whole sequence a few times a week up to daily at whatever time of day fits your schedule. Start by doing each pose for about five deep breaths and increase from there when you feel ready. If the whole sequence is too much, work the poses into your routine wherever they might fit. And if you're feeling stressed – something that's guaranteed to make you get older faster – or need a break during the sequence of poses, try child's pose, pictured at left. Knees can be together or wider apart, and arms alongside the body as pictured or out in front. Focus on the breath moving in and out of the body, and let yourself relax.
As always, if you have any concerns about starting a new routine, speak to your doctor. And a qualified yoga teacher will be able to answer any questions about the details of the poses. And don't forget to breathe!
Yoga is not just about asanas. That just covers about 8% of the whole science of yoga. In fact there is only one mention of asanam is the branch of yoga described by sage Patanjali.
Yoga and the whole science of anti ageing, can't be just dealt by right postures or asanam. It is a about the whole body, correct diet, right thoughts and breathing right.!
To know about the whole science refer to the book Sanatan Kriya- The Ageless Dimension- by Yogi Ashwini, It talks about ageing in a very scientific way and also mentions some ancient rasayan to arrest ageing
It is really beneficial,as a yoga practitioner i know it.In physiotherapic angle also this posture proves physical fittness of the body although the posture shown in the picture is not perfect.Knees will come closer.
I believe that these are the same Yoga poses that I learned in my Yoga Classes, which were not necessarily anti-aging. That, in my opinion, is just a catch phrase that everyone wants to be a part of. The art & exercise of Yoga, has it's own benefits. Similar to most exercise, healthy living and staying younger, longer is definitely an overall objective.
Is there a reason the woman must point her derriere in the direction of the Buddhas? This is highly disrespectful and underlines the superficial nature of so many people's interest in "Eastern" cultures and practices, including yoga.
It is amazing! She encourages me to start exercising more frequently.
It would be interesting to know more about her. thanks.
The best way to look young is to hang around with OLDER PEOPLE..
What a load of garbage. You want to learn about Yoga ? Read Patanjali, don't listen to some hippie scam artist in leotards. They'll teach you nothing but Pranayama and Asana, leaving out the other six limbs of yoga. Frauds, the lot of them.
thanks i will start now .
