"Young at heart" takes on a whole new meaning with the emergence of a new heart health concept among the cardiac community called "vascular age." While you may feel quite spry in your early 30s, your heart could literally be pushing 40, or depending on your lifestyle choices and other factors, 60-plus!
Vascular age is a relatively new concept that measures the "age" of your heart based on heart disease risk factors, explains Dr. Andy Wielgosz, professor of epidemiological and community medicine at the University of Ottawa. "The most important thing to know is that you can improve your heart age," he says. Take our quiz to learn how old your heart is (keep track of your points); and discover how you can shave off the years with simple lifestyle changes.
im 49 years old and my body feels like 70 years old its just the way i feel at my age
Very disappointing quiz - I was hoping it had some real information. This was mostly drivel designed to sell you a book. Many of the questions are nonsense. Really one point for a waist size under 28"? How many 6 foot + men or 5’9” + women have 28" waists? If they do then they may be under-weight and at a higher risk of many diseases (including heart problems). A better indicator would be the differential between chest and waist sizes. If your waist size is bigger than your chest you are in serious trouble. I'm a 5'9" male with a 40" chest and 32" waist and my heart is very healthy. Sodium intake MAY be an indicator of heart disease (contributor to hypertension). There are many other factors that must be considered along with this. Steel Mill workers and others in extremely hot environments sometimes have to take salt supplements in order to maintain their electrolytes. What about questions asking about your actual blood pressure, cholesterol count & resting heart rate? Don't know these numbers? You should. What about a question regarding annual physicals? Don't have an annual physical that includes blood work and an ECG? You should. What about gender? Males have a higher risk of heart disease than women. What about % body fat? Two people can be the same height and weight and have vastly different percent body fat. Family history may be an indicator of potential heart disease but the history on both sides (mother & father) must be considered and environmental factors (exercise, diet, stress, etc) can have an overriding effect. The only relevant questions were regarding; smoking, exercise, diet, stress and family history.
Slide 9 should read. 0 points if you don't have any of the following. 1 point each if you don't know and 2 points each for those that are in your medical history.
Turned 61 yesterday and I am fitter than most 30 year olds. I scored 17 because of family history and I smoked until I was in my 40's. There is nothing more I can do to reduce my score so I am unsure that this test is really relevant.
i'55 and proud of it
I am a spring chicken at 51. Yippee.
In light of the fact that I will be proud of becoming 90 and with a score of 16, I feel good. I felt good anyway. I keep busy both physically amd mentally.
Have just completed the test and according to this I am middle aged - my actual age is 77
slide 9 gives 2 points if you know your heart health and 1 if you don't, the scoring is wrong
Just completed the test....I'm Middle-aged at heart. Ew. Must change that.
