I believe if you read the instructions the nettipot and similar sinus rinses they instruct you to use distilled water (or previously boiled water) and not just tap water. Thank you for these tips. I have been suffering from hay fever and asthma since I was little, and with a few simple tricks found out that you can definitely reduce the annoyance and frustrations that come with them. Particularly, if you live near the sea, the salt water really helps clear blocked nasal passageways. Another thing that helped me was to start sleeping with natural bedding made from silk. There were cases last year or the year before where some people in Louisiana tried this remedy using room temperature tap water. Unfortunately there was a rare amoeba in the water and this infected their bodies and killed them (if you google it, you will find a few stories). Doctors strongly recommend individuals use sterilized products from pharmacies instead - like otrivin saline solution or Hydrasense. The Netipot is not recommended as it uses tap water.
