Your risk of getting cancer isn't all about genes and luck. In fact, at least half of all cancers can be prevented through lifestyle choices, according to the Canadian Cancer Society, and 30 to 35 percent by eating well, exercising and staying at a healthy weight.

So how can you lower your odds? Start by focusing on good nutrition, says Aileen Burford Mason, PhD, a former cancer researcher at the University of Toronto who now specializes in orthomolecular health and nutrition. "Not only is the wrong diet associated with getting cancers," she says, "it's also associated with recurrence." Read on to learn how good nutrition can help you prevent cancer in yourself and your family.

My 62 years old wife is dying of malignant Stage 4 colon cancer. She was a vegetarian but eat small amount of eggs and fish for 10 years prior to diagnosis in 2009 ( stage 3). She never drink pop, coffee or alcohol just tea and water. She eats a lots of veggies and fruits, and take Calcium-Magnesium - Vitamin D supplement as prescribed. She does not smoke nor anyone in the family or friends. She was in good shape as she exercise at least 90 minutes 5 times a week. We live in very ideal home and city.
EXCEPT SHE NEVER TOOK THE FECAL TEST SREENING FOR COLON CANCER.
She didnot respond to FOLFOX chemo, Palliative chemo with Avastin and Ironotecan and brain
radiation.
Yes, after diagnosis she found out relatives from country of origin have died of colon cancer decades ago but nobody discussed about it.
Hoping people just do not rely 100 % on internet info.

I have to agree with the above email....our food is full of toxins...unless you grow it yourself...when is our government going to recognize this cancer epidemic and make food producers more responsible for what they are spraying on crops.....organic is great but expensive for most folks...and how organic is an item coming from Mexico to our tables?

There is also the hereditary aspect to cancer that isnt mentioned. My wife died of colon cancer, supposedly that most affected by diet, and her diet was much the same or better that that mentioned here. She didnt drink or smoke either. It is not related entirely to lifestyle. Also some of the foods you show here are some of the most polluted by herbicides ansd pesticides, notably strawberries . Free range egg laying hens live in barns not outside , unless you have a backyard flock like we have. Vitamin D supplements are the surest way especially in winter.Cancers are affecting younger and younger people all the time, and its mostly beyond our control. Everything that gets poured on crops ends up in the air we breathe and and on the food we eat. More food to feed the world, more pollution. The safest food is the food you grow yourself.
