Why do you only list calories, fat and sodium, what about the sugar?

While the article was well intentioned, there was enough information left out to make me question the boogyman writing it. There was no mention of candy bar sizes to go along with the information. I don't hand out regular size candy bars of any kind. They're too costly. I'm sure baked snacks would be a healthier choice .. if they were widely available and cost was the same per gram as the regular ones in treat size packages. Alas, such is not the case and I don't think too many parents would allow their youngsters to eat repackaged healthier choices when they came from a zippered plastic bag even if the offering came with a copy of the label. Just a guess that peanuts and products with peanut anything was ommited intentionally while presuming that everything is now manufactured in peanut free factories. That could be a definate health risk and wasn't addressed.
I am old enough to remember receiving many fresh apples in my treat bag as well as home made treats like chocolate puffed wheat squares and popcorn balls. It's sad that the treats have become so sterilized along with the occasion.
Long live Hallowe'en and the wonderful childhood memories that go along with it. To the Hallowe'en grinches .. a hearty Happy Hallowe'en on you.

This post is ridiculous! Junk food is junk food, and it's all crap. 2g of fat less or more at Halloween won't make a big difference anyway, especially if you're a growing up kid. What matters is how you eat day in and day out the rest of the time. Kids (and adults) should rather learn to eat well ie. non processed, natural food on a regular basis. Then it won't matter to their health if they have some junk food treat on special occasions. You should focus on educating people about good sound nutrition and forget comparing between crappy bad foods...

Ok, this is so wrong, they're basically telling u not to have any candy! Now cum on................u can have all the candy u want on Halloween!!!

Let the kids just have fun. Parents can weed out the 'junk' candies...but for goodness sake let Halloween be fun and about dressing up! We're taking away the 'funnest' times from our kids....get them out and help them create a costume instead of buying one and have a laugh....beats sitting around the 'bloody computer' day/night.
Costumes, giggles and a bit of junk food....good for the soul!!! May it never end.

its not adults that are trick or treating, but I believe if you limit the candy your chidlren can have daily, now matter how many calories, i think they need the energy more and burn it at a faster rate.

Why anyone would want to live longer by taking all the fun out of life is a puzzle. If we can't enjoy treats without a guilt trip over their properties then go end it right now.

Why does Halloween always have to be about candy? Sugar is not good for anyone of any age. They are many other ways to celebrate this ocasion.

What a silly article. Did you never have a childhood? I can just imagine the children telling people handing out candy "oh Im sorry I can't take this candy because its bad for me" lol. You know you really need to get a life.

Honest to God... Its the second time straight i clicked to read an article which when i did least i say very dissappointed. It just a catchy headline with nothing but garbage inside. I thinking they get paid be the amout of veiws to the page...

I like candy.
I like Halloween.
I am 50.
I am relieved to report that the originator of this article is not my Parent.
Lighten up.
Have some fun.

So, slide 6: "Low-quality, tasteless chocholate..could lead to over-eating..." Does this mean the kids would spit out the best? Or maybe die of ruptured stomachs from pigging out on virtually-inedible c**p? The writer should give his/her head a shake... /o:b

Re: "Low Quality Chocolates"
Who gives away Lindt chocolates for Halloween?
I don't know any kid that has come home with 1 Lindt truffle in their goodie bag. Who comes up with these lists?

I would bet that she eats chips and candy every once in a while, too! I mean, who doesn't?
Chips and candy are delicious, but even so I don't eat them every day of the week. Moderation is important. Too much of anything is bad for you!

WOW! I guess whomever wrote this article was never a kid I am 63 years young and I remember going to school with a very poor family and this was their only treat on HALLOWEEN as they could only afford sandwiches made out of applebutter and cold potato. They would take a pillow case and start out right after school. I'm sure the sugar, peanutbutter candies held a bit of nutriton and like anything moderation is the key. I did not like this article and poo poo whomever wrote it.

It seems to me that Humpty Dumpty and Old Dutch are taking the rap for being "not good" for chidren. Guess you haven't read the labels on Tostitos or Lays huh?

Taking the fun out of Halloween.

Happy Halloween. People always ask me don't I have concern having a few treats everyday...having a few drinks per week enjoying friends and laughing until we have to pee....sharing stories and crazy memories from fun times(like Halloween)
My response is always the same..If I had known I would live this long, 91 and counting....I sure would have taken better care of myself(haha).
My advice is for folks to have fun, enjoy life with a few treats in the company of family and friends....and tell these so called life coaches and experts to fix their own lives and stop trying to take the fun, adventure and treats in our lives away.

Should use proper grammer in these.

Nothing like spoiling a child's fun.

I am a 61 year old grandfather that has lived my life eating all the crap I want, drinking whatever I want including a few Budweisers, and taking chances that leave me with an adrenalin rush.

Now I find out from the "experts" that I have eaten the wrong crap and living my life in a very risky and dangerous way.

For the love of God let people do whatever they want without feeling guilty about leaving the "bubble" that we are supposed to live in.

I have a website that writes about my life and love of having a good time. I am easy to find if you just click the 3 w's and look at my registered name with this post.

Oh, come on. Eating crap candy one night a year is not going to kill kids. Don't people who write this kind of stuff have anything else more productive to do with their time? If she thinks handing out "healthy & nutritious" alternatives will spare her soapy windows, she's in for a big surprise come morning! It ain't called "trick or treat" for nothing!

The nutritional value listed for the Butterfinger bar is also for a whole bar! Who hands out whole bars at halloween? Also - in the package I just bought to hand out tonight, Butterfinger, Crunch and Baby Ruth - the Butterfinger has the least amount of saturated fats! I agreed that saturated fats are bad, but as others have pointed out, this is a once a year thing, and if you're going to be making people feel bad about what they're eating, at least state correct and valuable facts.

i like halloween u don,t

a diet consisting mainly of candy and chips....even children would get sick of it after awhile! of course no-one's stupid enough to feed this to themselves, let alone their children...right??
having said that, if candy and treats can be made less toxic...why not? they're made the way they are because that's what's cheaper and most profitable.

C'mon, did you really think about calories and healthy treats when you went out trick or treating on Halloween? Halloween treats handed out to Kids are for kids, not adults and let kids be kids without having to worry about healthy treats on top of everything else that is fed to them by the media. OH yes, please let us know which homes will be giving out Lindor Chocolates so we can redirect the kids that come to our door.

Reading the comments below/above (not sure where mine is going to get displayed), it doesnt take much to figure out why America has so many obese people! People are so lazy and so disinterested in their health and their eating habits that they dislike and bash the one article that tries to convey to them what is wrong with some of the crap they eat in halloween! good job people!

SERIOUSLY !!!! I get over 200 kids coming to my door, I will not be giving expensive candies, I give bite size chocolates, lollipops and rockets to each child !!!! I remember our halloween nights, I am 1 of 4, how much fun going through the bags to see what we got. don't remember eating all of it though !!!! Mom probably took it away, that was ok. Enjoy the night, enjoy making memories for the kids !!

Halloween is once a year. So let kids be kids geesh.

It's blatently obvious who paid for this little piece of advertising,,,,,,,,,LINDT!!!!!
Nothing wrong with any type of candy now & again...................go out and live your life and let the kids enjoy their halloween candy!!!

The kids can't have fun on Hallowe'en anymore and the parents have to watch everything their children eat. The same can be said for Easter too, if taken in the same context. In order to pacify all the "green" nuts, why not just cancel Hallowe'en, Easter and oh, might as well throw Christmas in there too. Better yet, why just not dig ourselves a hole and live in it.
For heaven's sake, those 3 events I mentioned only come once a year, so lay off what we should give out or eat. GET YOURSELF A LIFE AND LEAVE OUR'S ALONE!!!!!!

My god, its Halloween!! Its supposed to be one of the few times of year they can splurge and have this kind of stuff!! If theyre eating healthy the rest of the year who cares, let them enjoy! And im sorry to the lady who hands out juice boxes! But have you looked at the sugar content in those juice boxes? Most are just as bad as the candy, sorry. The carbohydrates are basically sugar too. Most juices are minimum 25%. And ya, who in heck can afford lindor and lindt for themselves, let alone to give out at halloween

Sticky candies CAN be hard on fillings in teeth and should perhaps be avoided.
Personally, I prefer name brand chocolate bars.
Some of the "children" who come to my door look like perhaps a beer and a cigar would be a more age appropriate treat!

No doubt many if not most of the candy out for Halloween is full of questionable flavourings that may well make many a child feel not too well. They certainly would be likely to set me off just with the cheap bad taste of many of them. But to see you recommend Lindt products which I have found to be close to the worst quality and bad tasting chocolate ever, is quite disturbing. It may be everywhere but it is totally sickening horrid stuff. There used to be, in my childhood 70 years ago, truly great tasting Swiss Suchard chocolate which I've not seen since. Typically, if I find a good product it will soon be discontinued.
The general population doesn't seem to appreciate quality and encourage junk.
While I've found Old Dutch Regular Original chips to be about the best chips currently available, from my point of view, nothing matches the taste of the Saratoga chips that were on the market when I was a child. Another case of "If it's good they'll discontinue it". Damned idiot society. :)

I love how this post says you can't eat anything but Lindor chocolate and other items you WONT find in your halloween trick or treat bag. We all know its horrible to eat candy, but really, show me the house that hands out Lindor chocolate...

Nonsense ! Go and enjoy yourself

Once a year is not going to kill anyone. There is always some one in the crowd to ruin a holiday

How sad that we can't let our kids have a good time on Halloween without the worry about what is healthy & what isn't.
Yes maybe the candy is not good for them but that is why we have tooth brushes. I am 74 years old had 4 kids that went out trick or treating & felt it was MY job to control the amount of candy they could have each day until it was gone
Come on loosen up let the kids be kids for one day of the year.

Interesting facts but really, it's not like anyone is going to be gorging on them more than a couple weeks from now. There must be more useful info to report on.

These tips are near useless. You basically just labelled anything gotten during Halloween time show of raisins and poisonous apples. What is Bamfords stance on opened candy anyways? I bet he's one of those people that hands out celery stalks on Halloween.

You obviously know very little about nutrition...Lindt chocolate's main ingredient is vegetable oil...take 5 seconds of your time to read the ingredients before posing as an expert online

Are you people insane?!? It's treats, for crying out loud. Halloween has never been a celebration of health food. The secret is to keep the junk food to special occasions, which in my book is about 3 times per year. If it's not a steady diet, it isn't going to kill you. Pick the times you want to splurge, & eat sensibly & healthfully the rest of the time. Happy Halloween!

For the last few years I have been handing out juice boxes instead of candy. Most of the trick or treaters are pleasantly surprised.

I cannot imagine that people are going to go out and spend the extra money on Lindt truffle balls to hand out as Hallowe'en candies. People are a little more frugal than that, and quite frankly, they're not going to think about a parent eating the candies while they're making their treat purchases, never mind their cholesterol levels.

I really believe Greening Halloween is the most sensible thing to do with junk food being cheap and budgets still being tight. There are a ton of resources, How Tos and inexpensive sugar free candy available that is just as good and better to give as Halloween Treats. Check out GreenHalloween.org for more resources and ideas.
