Improve your diet by limiting your consumption of four of the worst foods you can eat

1. Soft drinks

“[Soda pops contain] empty calories without any nutritional value,” says says Richard Béliveau, chair for cancer prevention and treatment at the University of Quebec in Montreal.

In his book, Eating Well, Living Well (McClelland & Stewart), Béliveau writes that Canadians drink 120 litres of soft drinks per year. With 30 g of sugar in each 350 mL bottle of Coke, we’re using a lot of unnecessary sweet stuff to wash down our meals.

But pop isn’t the only beverage that can sneak unnecessary calories into your diet. New research suggests that beverages such as alcohol and sweetened and unsweetened fruit drinks may account for a too-large proportion of our recommended daily calorie intake. In an 18-month study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, subjects consumed more than 350 of their daily calories from beverages—that’s about 20 percent of their total daily intake.

I would agree with the 4 choosen here. As for the comment-people in hospitals- I believe it is their job. Almost everyone that works at a hospital works long hours without breaks (infrequent eating=weight gain and poor snack choices), a very stessful job (cortisol imbalance=fat gain in stomach), night shifts(a carcinogen and creates coritsol imbalance), lots of hours(too tired or cant find the time to exercise). I cant think of a worse situation to become overweight, and for the record I don't blame the workers I understand that it is that industries way of life.

How could anyone be critical of this article on the 4 worst foods? Yes, most people know deep-down that these foods are bad for you and yet most people indulge anyway. Nevertheless it doesn't hurt to be reminded about the it, and encouraged to eat healthier foods.

To bad alot of people can't afford the good food but rather the fast food crap.

I agree that most people do know that fried & processed foods are very unhealthy and yet, really don't realize just how harmful they are. A major weight loss organization, which I will not name, has all their clients purchasing their premade and prepackaged foods. Their motto is that you should not deny yourself any kinds of foods that you love, but to keep the portions under control. However, their prepackaged brownies, cheesecakes and burritos still have all the harmful preservatives and fat that should be avoided. So many people are taken in with this kind of weight loss theory. It is not helping them to cook healthily for themselves - to buy fresh fruits & vegetables and fresh meats and to leave the cheese, donuts and other crap alone.

I am VERY stupid - have been all my life - YOU figure it out!!!!

Why is it that the fattest people I see are those that work in hospitals?

Needing to have these foods pointed out to us as being "unhealthy" would make a person a complete idiot, as if they couldnt figure that out on their own? Getting really tired of articles like this promoting such obvious knowledge as some new discovery - some big revelation! Why not publish an article on "why drinking a dozen beer everyday isnt a healthy choice"? The articles published by Sympatico are an insult to a 5 year olds intelligence

Thanks for pointing out the regrettable typo on the last slide of this article. It has been fixed. And thanks for your comments!

Its not the saturated fat that will get you its the trans fats that are the deadly ones. A little saturated fat is okay. Butter is better than margarine because it is from a natural sorce, as oppssed to margarine that is chemically produced. just look at all the crap that they put in margarine. Also coconut oil is the best oil to use for cooking or baking. Now i'm not saying to use a lot of saturated fat products however the body has been processing satutared fat since the dawn of time so it knows how to deal with, unlike trans fats.

Too bad the "expert" forgot to mention alcohol and cheese.

Justin: Are you saying that the only way we can enjoy food is if it makes us fat? What a load of crap. Just more rationalization for eating too much and letting yourself go to hell. I'm over 6 ft. tall, in my 60's, and weigh 185 pounds. Every bite I eat, I enjoy. I'm healthy, active, and I enjoy a good meal as much as anyone. I know what I like to eat, and I know when I've had enough. How about you? I bet you spend 95% of your time sitting on your ass in front of a TV or computer somewhere, stuffing your face with pizza and fries. Good luck with that.

When and why did this only apply to the over weight?
Everyone with a mouth eats this crap on occassion, some are even lucky enough to be able to eat it and maintain a normal BMI. No these foods are not healthy...and maybe we could use some informative well written articles on healthy subjects that we all don't know about. Who doesn't know that processed cake cookies and chip are bad for you, it's the same as thinking that smokers don't know that breathing in a lung full of toxins is bad for them. Stating the obvious is lazy journalism. (couple that with poor proof reading and this article is what you get) It could have been shortened to two foods...sugar and bad fats.

What is heat disease?!?!

Whatever happened to everything in moderation? I cook for a living and the changes we are going through in restaurants are helping people live a healthier life. Eat food ingredients we can pronounce not all this chemical garbage and make it from scratch so we know what it contains.

Interestingly I recall a study by Swedish labs some 15 to 20 years ago where they found that french fry potatoes properly prepared had more vitamin A then a boiled potato that had sat for 15 minutes after cooking. I'm skinny and eat fried potato and whatever almost every day at age 79 and it doesn't look like I'm dying too soon. But I use peanut oil which like olive oil is unsaturated fat and healthy for those not prone to easy weight gain. Too much pasta is more hazard for fat belly bad heart from what I can see. But eating boring and dying old doesn't appeal to me. I like browned food which is also said to be bad. Tough! I like it. Gotta die sometime.

It's interesting the individuals who criticize people for drinking this stuff and calling them fat are the same ones who smoke marijuana and tell you to mind your own business if you criticize them for using this illegal drug. Too funny.

Just accept that there will be fat people. Stop trying to scare them with health risks. Let them be jolly.

I would love to respond to the above comment:
This is the same mentality that causes us to have drunk drivers, drug addictions, or an 18 month old pneumonia patient whose brother recently died from SIDS.
Chronic jolliness is the art of letting foods decide for you when and how one dies or becoming and feeling utterly wretched before you finally die. I see the sad consequences of being chronically “jolly” with certain foods everyday in the Emergency Unit where I work. This is where we all wished someone cared enough about them to tell them to stop eating certain foods, or they understood that having to constantly prick your body or face amputation, having a stroke, and being paralyzed, loosing speech, bladder/bowel control and having someone wipe you or becoming blind is no jolly matter at all when it suddenly strikes you.
Chronic jolliness is a lifetime of chronic pains and misery for most individuals. Please keep informing your readers of the health risks. Those of us who would rather die on our term will value the information.
Thank you kindly
Nurse Nancy and Dr. Stevenson

you know people have the free choice to eat these things, and i agree with the other comments, besides, not every person eats these things every day, they are sometimes foods. Besides people can't keep stressing out over which foods to eat because that will cause people to stress and then eating becomes a chore not something natural. these foods are junk foods and should only be eaten on occasions. I think that we just need to make smart choices because we cant have others running our lives, but not stress too much, because we need to still enjoy food, and life.

I agree with what most people are saying, that people should simply enjoy their food and let it be. Sure we can all be healthy and live until 120 years old, but where the hell is the fun in that when you can't enjoy food the entire time?

By the way, what is HEAT disease? A typo me-thinks???

Just like anabolic steroids, people should be able to make educated choices in what they ingest into their bodies. Weigh the advantages and risks of your diet and be prepared to face the consequences of your actions. It's a great feeling to live in a free country where one can make their own decisions!

Just accept that there will be fat people. Stop trying to scare them with health risks. Let them be jolly.

I agree but there is a lot more,I agree with the other comment, plus all the other stuff the FDA is not telling us cause large corps. would lose mega bucks, shame on them.

How about the foods that have "tran-fat free" on the packages?
