Jellybeans are a tasty treat and come in many flavours, but did you realize their shiny coating is made from bug feces? Shellac, also known as confectioner’s glaze, is made from a resin excreted by the female lac beetle, indigenous to India and Thailand. The resin is processed into flakes, dissolved in denatured alcohol to make liquid shellac, and then sprayed on food products or used to make lacquer for hardwood floors and furniture.
Shellac is also sprayed on grocery store apples to make them shiny and keep them fresh in the store. When you pick an apple fresh from the tree and rub it on your shirt, you will produce a nice shine from the natural waxy protection already present in the apple skin. But if you wash that apple first, you won’t be able to make it shine as washing it removes the waxy coating. Apples sold in grocery stores must be washed for sanitary reasons and then sprayed with a fine mist of shellac to restore outer skin protection. Without this waxy layer, the washed apples would spoil too quickly.
For the fools that think this information is a "waste of time", I'm reminded of a quote by Mark Twain that says,"A man that doesnt read is as ignorant as a man that can't".
For anyone to think that this information isn't important, you're fooling yourself.
The sooner we stop eating packaged, manufactured, processed foods, the better we will be. We see children hitting puberty earlier, more people being diagnosed with ailments, higher levels of autism, diabetes, A.D.D, etc. and we need to look towards what we are putting into our bodies. The best advice anyone of us in the medical profession will give is this: if you can't pronounce the ingredients in your food, if your food has more than 5 ingredients and/or you want to live healthier, stop eating chemicals. Period.
There is nothing wrong with moderation but moderation means ONCE IN A WHILE, not daily. So, go ahead, have some chips or candy or soda but only as a treat and only nominally as opposed to eating that everyday. Our greatest natural resource is our children so be sure to give their "motors" the proper fuel so that they stand the best chance of functioning to the best of their ability. I am done ranting now and am climbing off my soapbox.lol
what a great way to recycle!
Randy and those like Randy: "just eat and be merry". Really? This points to a more disturbing fact than the article attempted to hint at "add extra cancer risk to your diet today", which is: those who eat irresponsibly cost everyone else a lot of tax. Every time you have a heart attach or stroke, or anything else because you eat poorly, we all pay for it big time. Eat more real foods every time, it isn't hard to do, lets all be more encouraging of each other to improve and change our eating habits why not?!
Bizarre, no. Interesting, yes. Sensationalized to prey on the fears of the ignorant, definitely. Speaking of ignorance, please learn some science before writing in this field. For example, carnauba wax is used on both food and in car wax. So what. The sports drinks in your article also contain the same solvent as most household cleaners (it's called water). Methylene chloride is cited as a carcinogenic (cancer causing) solvent used for decaffinating coffee -- even though it's removed. Aren't you aware that alcohol is cancer causing and, in comparison, we drink it. Lastly you refer to "iodizing radiation". There's no such thing. I think you meant to say ionizing radiation. Again, in comparison, x-rays are ionizing radiation, and we use them on people. I have no problem with the safety of any of these foods and you should not be raising needless concerns while pretending to be a journalist.
It seems someone forgot the newest one that is very gross.
"L-cysteine", used a dough conditioner is made from human hair from China and also from dead Chinese people!
A small amount is made from "Staphoccoli" as well. That is the synthetic source.
Look it up- Google "L-cysteine" !
Check your bageles and bread and lots of other things.
These are true facts and I don't like it .
I have to get my bread now from a special place .
Also when you get a product with "natural rasberry"
from the health food store ,- The natural flavouring comes from a gland in the Anuses of beavers ! Fact !
How ingenious, It is so great that we can make use of everything and have our foods look
so good too. Look on the bright side!
Corn, it is so useful.
I have drank decaf tea for years and am still fine. Are the environmentalists going to protect
us from everything? They will have to create a whole new world because you just can't
protect everyone from everything. There are risks in just living.
We used to eat pickled pigs feet skin and all. Delicious!
When I was a child we rode along on the combine which was great fun. We sat in the hopper where the grain came in from the machine. There were grasshopper legs among the grain and
we children ate them. Good protein. Now I am 77 yrs and have survived all that-the machinery rides, the bugs etc. Enjoy!
This is a great column! I just have a comment on carmine colouring made from cochineal beetles. There has been a fuss recently about this, but I suspect this more natural, less processed colour is less hazardous than most of the synthetic, petroleum-based dyes which get FDA approval
While you are at it why don't you mention overcooked bacon and meats are carinogens as well. Maybe people will stop eating crispy bacon as well.
We breath in a crap load of germs, we open bathroom doors at home or in some resistant , or some department store after washing our hands just to get more germs, or some folks do not wash their hands at all no matter what end they relieved themselves & walk amount us.
Write ups like this can scare a lot of people & perhaps get folks to worry & worry can cause health issues as well.
This article is a waste of time in attempting to scare the ignorant. It's just like saying our drinking water (with its H2O molecules) could come from animal and human urine that has dried and the H2O molecules recycled back into the clouds. There are over 1,000 different types of germs and bacteria in our human body. So, just eat, drink and be merry.
