Self control
Rowena - August 17, 2010 - 21:00
I work in a bakery. I feel like I am sabotaging myself every day as I make cookies, cakes, croissants, and white bread. I cannot change the things I am required to make at work. But I often taste things I bake, and every time I'm hungry there are cookies sitting RIGHT THERE! My husband keeps our cookie jar at home full, and it's clear and sitting on the counter! I feel like I'm surrounded by sweets, and I do not have the self control to stay away from them. How do I build my self control?! If you say "just tell yourself you don't need it" or something along those lines, you're wasting your time. That would be EXERCISING self control. I don't seem to have any!!! HELP!

Wow, that is tough! The first
Wow, that is tough! The first thing to remember is that it's normal not to have self-control. Biologically we're programmed to eat what's in front of us and as much as we can, because way in our history there would almost always have been at least seasonal scarcity. It's hard to fight that impulse!
I love the suggestion of always making sure you have healthy food. When you're hungry you're hungry - you need to do something about it! Also, what if you had, say, a time of day for tasting things, and whenever you have a craving you can put the item aside for 3:00 or whenever it is? Then it's a ritual you can look forward to... sounds like you also need help from your husband, I would be 10 pounds heavier if we kept cookies in the house. -Kat Tancock, senior web editor
Self control
It must be really hard to NOT have any baked goods on any given day. Maybe you will get sick of it?
I too cannot resist the urge to eat junk if it is readily available. Out of sight - out of mind is such a true statement for me. If I don't see it, I don't even think twice about it. I try not to buy any for the house, but my husband buys it sometimes and there is always candy at my office.
I guess part of my challenge is to learn to say more "no" to junk and more "yes" to healthy choices.
Good luck to you!!!
Kid in a Candy Store!
I find that when I stay up late (past 11:00pm) I am prone to eat more junk, wether it be chocolate, chips or even a cold beverage, during the later part of the evening I lose all self control. I think part of it is I tend not to let my kids have too many sugary snacks and I try to lead by example, therefore I don't eat it during the day..I guess I save those cravings for after I have gone to bed...any suggestions?
Self control
I hear you!! I have found that if I keep healthy choices as handy it is easier to choose the healthy options. so at work make sure you have cut up fruit and veggies available for nibbling - do the same at home. If I have the healthy options and pack them for myself at work it goes much easier. I can't control what is around me but I can control what goes in my mouth and while it is difficult having the healthy options ready to go makes it a little easier. You may want to challenge your hubby to a cookie free week with some kind of reward at the end - like if you keep cookies out of the house for a week you will go with him to his choice of movie (or something like that).
Hang in there!! I always remind myself that nothing tastes as good as thin feels!
Wishing you all the best!
