Post-dinner Eating
My problem is eating after dinner, or too much dinner. We have a busy lifestyle like everyone else, and often do not get home until 6 p.m. or later. Taking time to make dinner often means we eat late, and I tend to eat the full dinner amount then go to bed. Other times when we do get home on time, I eat dinner, then we may stay up late and I will snack throughout the evening. Even though my snacks are always healthy, they just end up being too many calories.
A couple of things that I have done to combat this are to get out the slow cooker and plan ahead. Sometimes I will get up 15 minutes early and throw some meat, veggies and seasoning into the slow cooker (crock pot) so it will be ready to go when we walk in the door. Another thing I have been doing is on the weekend, I will make up several meals and throw them in the freezer - this way, the night before I just have to put it in the fridge to thaw, then throw it in the oven to heat it up when we get home. We have also learned that dinners can be as easy as a salad or veggies with some meat. I am making a practice of keeping cooked chicken breasts in the fridge, lots of boiled eggs ready to go, and tuna and other canned meat in the cupboard. This seems to work well.

After dinner eating
To make things easier I have stopped buying snack foods that are high in calories. If they are not in the house, I can't eat them.
I totally agree! I never let
I totally agree! I never let my boyfriend buy ice cream. I tell him, if you want ice cream, we'll go out to a restaurant and get some. I'm amazed at people who can keep things like that in the house without eating the entire thing!
Busy lifestyle and meal planning
Planning ahead is the key for me too! My crock pot is my lifesaver! I love scouring the internet for healthy recipes and I love coming home to the smell of dinner!! It takes the guess work out of what's for dinner!
I have found that if I plan a walk or a bike ride in the evening after dinner it helps to really curb my appetite. The combination of exercise and fresh air not only helps to curb my appetite but it does help me to sleep better too!
But on the occasion that I just have to have something I allow myself some homemade popcorn - it is good fiber and it feels 'snacky'!
I have the same problem! I
I have the same problem! I often go to the gym after work so it's at least 7:30 by the time I get home. I like to remember that you don't have to have a big dinner. The only reason we think of it is cultural. I often will just make a big salad, or a salad and smoothie, or something like (healthy) crackers with guacamole or eggplant dip and some veggies. Make sure you have a good healthy lunch and a healthy afternoon snack and there's no need at all for a big meal at dinnertime! -Kat Tancock, senior web editor
Hi Evelyn, I can so relate to
Hi Evelyn,
I can so relate to your problem of late dinners. My partner works till 7 so by the time he gets home it's between 7:30 and 8. I've always waited for him to get home so we can have dinner together. I get home from work about 5pm and am usually fairly hungry so I'll have a "snack" (or two) before getting dinner ready then I'll eat with him. And then there's the late night snacking!!
Well, I've decided that starting now, I am going to make dinner as soon as I get home and eat when it's ready. I will keep a plate for him and join him with a nice tall glass of lemon-water and ice as he eats his dinner when he gets home.
Try this
I have the same issue with my spouse sometimes but I find it nearly impossible to just have a drink while he is eating. Try having some steamed veggies or a salad. It is much easier to resist having another plateful when you already have something to chew on.
My Solution to After Dinner Eating
My solution this past month has been working very well. Usually after the kids are in bed and lunches are made I pull out all the junk food that I don't let the kids eat and snack away with hubbie on the couch. We both need to lose a few pounds so we decided to clear out the cupboards and the hiding spots....yes even the secret mommy chocolate bars and chipies! We now stock the fridge with fun and interesting & our fav fruits and veggies. It's been a few weeks now and things seem to be going well..I will let you know what happens when the stress sets in.
Out of sight, out of mind
Glad to know that this has been working well for you, too! I found that the best thing to do to avoid eating junk food is to keep it out of your sight. That way, if you don't see it, there's nothing there to tempt you. But getting the food out of your house is even better!
