Binge eating

Chantal - August 27, 2010 - 21:41

Sometimes I eat to the point of feeling sick and bloated and gross.  It's usually when I am bored and have extra time on my hands, not because I am hungry.  In my case it's mainly psychological, and I usually feast on junk of course.  It leaves me feeling really depressed and out of control.

Has anyone else gone experienced this?  Any advice on how to stop doing it?

Same

I definetly do the same thing.Eat out of boredom or for energy. The last week has been crazy at work,so when I get home I have dinner then sit on the couch.Once I'm there I need a 'snack' but then I overeat and feel gross. I have trouble telling myself no. I like the idea of brushing my teeth instead though, might give it a try

eating distractions

Definitely agree with ones that have already been said: go for a walk or run when you feel the urge to eat (or any other exercise). it not only distracts you at the moment, but it is rare to feel like eating after getting some good exercise in. Not keeping junk food in the house is another #1.
Also, when your body is saying "munch, munch", try giving it something else - a glass of water is one of my favorites, gum works for some people.
Another tip is to try and and consciously chew each bite of food 20 times. You won't eat as much and you start actually thinking about what you are eating.

To avoid binge eating, I try

To avoid binge eating, I try to make sure that I've eaten small meals throughout the day. Then, I'm never left too hungry and feel like I need to eat a lot to fill up.

Boredom eating

This is going to sound a little strange, but, when you're bored and you feel like you need to eat, go brush your teeth. I find that the act of brushing my teeth makes me feel like I've just finished a meal (and therefore don't need to eat) and the taste of toothpaste in my mouth makes me less likely to crave food. Then - and this is the most important part - find something to do. Anything. Just keep yourself busy and, eventually, you'll find you've forgotten about the food.

Me too

Me too. I often wonder why did I eat that? Or why did I eat so much of that? Or why did I eat that so fast? Hmmpf. In fact I'm feeling bloated right now.

Me too

I have this same problem. I am a stress eater, or I eat out of boredom. The most effevtive way I have found of avoiding binge eating is to go for a walk, or run. If you don't take any cash with you you can take the time to think about why you want to binge, and you can't even stop anywhere while you are out. Just take the time to go through why you are feeling low. And mentally prepare yourself for not giving in to the cravings when you get back. I also don't keep any junk in the house. I know I can't resist it so I don't have it around.

We try not to keep too much

We try not to keep too much junk in the house, but we have some occasionally. I think I would eat just about anything away if there wasn't any junk around:)
The strange thing is that I am not depressed or anything like that when I'm doing it; I am after I'm done though...
I like the idea of a walk. It's easy and it doesn't cost a thing. Thanks for your input!

Tips to avoid binge eating

I'm guilty of overeating as well. It happens when I'm in a bad mood or feeling bored. It's definitely something I struggle with on a regular basis. But we have some great tips on the site that have helped me stay mindful of the food I'm eating, rather than munching mindlessly. Check out these tips and let me know if they help you, too.
