I've had numerous shoulder injuries in the past and the first thing anyone says is 'rotator cuff' even though that's not always the case - certainly wasn't in my case. At any rate... had similar pains that eventually extended down my arm and side and created a numbness in my forefinger and thumb. I asked my Dr. and he thought it might be 'thoracic outlet syndrome' which was later confirmed by a chiropractor. TOC is essentially a pinched nerve in your neck that causes various shoulder and pectoral girdle discomfort - think sciatica but in your upper body. Turns out that in my case this was caused by a combination of previous injuries and, most significantly, poor posture from working on a laptop computer. The Chiro explained how this is becoming more common because people who use laptops tend to hunch 'into' them. In my office I raised my laptop on a stand and lowered my chair. Between that and so cautious work by the Chiro the pain was gone in a few weeks.
