The Pigeon Pose
The Pigeon Pose

It's said that the yogis do 108 sun salutations each day. That must make them feel beyond great. But I'm guessing that they're also not driving to the mall to exchange clothes at the Gap, making 3 separate lunches, taking their kids to the dentist—and do they even fill out tax forms?

Anyway, last week in yoga class I learned that if I thought my Downward Dog needed work, then my Pigeon Pose was of more concern. Pigeon, whereby you tuck one leg under, extend the other backward, then stretch forward, was a bit of an ouch, although I realize it simply requires practice.

I like how our teacher focuses on working one part of the body each week for flexibility. For example, last week it was hips (hence, pigeon). I can't deny that my mind often wanders during yoga...like, is there a beauty line out there just for yoga (not that I would buy into it). Our teacher has requested that we don't wear perfume to class, which makes sense and I respectfully comply. But I do take the liberty of spritzing my face with Dermalogica Antioxidant HydraMist spray when I get home from work and just before I go back out to class. The light essential oils completely revive me and put me in the mood--even for Pigeon.

I can so relate to the way you talk about your mind wandering while in a yoga pose!
As for the pigeon,we often do it as part of the stretches that end my dance class, and while I experience some pain with it, I consider it that "good" i.e., exercise pain, and it does get easier and more comfortable with practice. So don't fear the pigeon! It still amazes me how mainstream and ubiquitous yoga has become in the west, especially over the last decade. And thanks for the reminder about no perfume in exercise classes.

Pigeon is actually one of my favourite poses, but I was blessed with unnaturally flexible hips, so it's soothing, not painful. It's a great pose if you've been sitting all day, or walking, or running, to relieve muscles that get tight.
