Roundup of women's health news
A snapshot of important news in women's health this week:

Bone Health: From this week's issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal comes a report that chronic use (for 7 years or more) of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which are commonly prescribed to prevent heartburn, may increase the risk of fracture. This class of drugs inhibits secretion of certain stomach acids that are required for the absorption of calcium in the intestine.

Abortion and Mental Health: A draft report from an American Psychological Association task force, released August 12, states that "there is no credible evidence that a single elective abortion of an unwanted pregnancy in and of itself causes mental health problems for adult women."

Fertility: A study published in the British Medical Journal on August 9 shows that two common first-line treatments for unexplained infertility simply don't work.  The treatments, clomifene citrate and unstimulated intrauterine insemination of sperm, were no better than expectant management—a fancy way of saying "watch and wait".
