News: Obese woman gets her parking spot—and a lot of flack
News: Obese woman gets her parking spot—and a lot of flack

Whether or not obesity is a moral issue or health condition is a hot-button topic among Canadian newsreaders today in response to a story about the Quebec Human Rights Commission ruling in favour of a morbidly obese woman who was denied a handicap parking space by her condo board.

Marise Myrand, who has diabetes, uses a wheelchair and needs an oxygen tank to breathe, asked her condo board for a spot closer to her building, reports the Canadian Press. According to the article, the board told her to ask the woman who held the spot is she would give it up, but she would not. The Human Rights Commission ruled that the board discriminated against Myrand because of her obesity and ordered they pay $10,000 in damages. Myrand will also receive the better parking space next month.

Check out some of the comments on CBC.ca and globeandmail.com and you’ll see that while some of the posts are sympathetic towards Myrand, many are scathing: one commenter on CBC.ca calls her lazy while another calls her irresponsible for bringing her health problems on herself.

While we will never know the details of Myrand’s physical condition, we do have a snapshot of the kind of attitudes she probably experiences on a daily basis. Why do some people react with such anger towards people who are obese? I wonder: Would attitudes towards someone suffering from smoking-induced lung cancer be the same? What about a person who lost a limb in a surfing accident? We all make private choices every day that affect our health one way or another. Why is obesity different?

Do you think the Quebec Human Rights Commission ruled correctly in this case?

Obesity is a serious problem in the society today. As an obese person, I don't know exactly what to do and where to start to fight this excess weight that I have for many years now. Searching over the internet helps me a lot to gather helpful tips and advice. Oh! by the way, have you heared something about the Roca Labs Formula? I have visited this site - youtube.com/user/RocaLabsReviews and there are many possitive effect to the users. I hope that this could be a permanent solution for obesity.

Why would you insult a lady because she has a problem with her weight and that si is in a wheelchair? Plus you point our that is is FRENCH, thus arrogant and this and that. i am sorry to say that some of you kind are also behaving this way but fortunately it is not all of them. This being said, ALL CONDOS should provide a parking spot for the handicaped people. Just to make it easier for them to get to the elevator when they park inside. The rest of what you said is irrelevant. Condo boards are them, too ignorant to provide people with an handicap with special parking space. I have MS and I can't walk no more. I have to cross the whole garage, sometimes all wet because there is a special space to wash your car inside thus depriving me to wheel my chair on a dry stop a lot of times. On top of that, my husband who helps me getting out of the car has a lot of difficulty opening the door to let me out with my wheelchair. Now...what do you have to say ? You would prefer being a handicap person in order to have the privilege to park closer to the elevator ? You do have another kind of problem it seems....

You do not have to drive to get a handicapped parking space or a wheelchair plate.. You have to be certified disabled by a doctor to receive a permit that travels with you in any vehicle you use. If she has a van it could be driven by a relative friend or caretaker. The real issue here is the lack of parking for the disabled. The building should have provided more spots and accomodated both their disabilities. In fact the general lack of handicapped parking is well known to people with disabiities. Also the attitudes of people who are not handicapped who are outraged that someone else has the right to park 10 feet closer to the building. Be glad that you can walk that 10 feet. There are more attitudes of outrage here than the situation warrants. Obviously she is under medical care and none of us actually knows her medical history. She fought for her rights. The other woman didn't. But the condo board should have resolved this more amicably and avoided penalty. How hard would it have been to designate another spot as handicapped? A lot less than $10,000.

Are the people on the commission obese? With a ruling like this we allow a person to escape the responsibility for themselves with a sad excuse and sluff themself off on others; creating a prejudiced and negative atmosphere for the rest of the condo members. No wondering about the hostility here.

Human Rights?????? And where is the the rights of the person who was displaced from her parking place? I have diabetes also ... I don't use it as an excuse for privileges. The exercise would probably do the lady good. And, if she is so incapable of walking, how can she safely drive a car? What about the rights of all the people who she is putting at possible risk????

So Sonia, just exactly what does this statement mean? "This lady was rewarded $10,000, which was probably close to the cost of the spot she wanted in ther first place that she was willing to pay plus some punative damages; don't take everything so literally." If she's lviing in a Condo Development she sure as Hell isn't going to be paying $10,000.00 for parking. As for punitive damages, why should she be Rewarded for being an ignorant, arrogant, ass. I have a French friends who seem to be the exception(s) to the rule when it comes to Quebecers and their "ATTITUDES"!
This lady is No Exception, she's an Ignorant, Arrogant, Rude, Bully who thinks she is OWED something, like so many others like her.

Here we go again!!! Darwinism in reverse. We reward idiots, who should NOT be driving anyway, and we send our youngest, fittest and brightest off to war, where they are awarded a service medal, euphemistically called the "Forgot to duck" medal. This woman should give that money to a charity, but she had probably ear marked it for a massive grocery run. The Human Rights Commission is a joke! Their mandate used to be to bring awareness of cruelty and protect where possible, not hand out wads of cash to a creature who claims discrimination due to her bulk. I suppose that when she has a crash and the oxygen tank blows up that will no be her fault either. Shame on you Human Rights lunatics.

I have a handicapped sticker in Nova Scotia. I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis and hyper active thyroid. (Makes you gain weight). I am also on Prednisone and Methotrexate injections which also make you gain weight. I have good days and bad days but I keep moving EVERY day! I also watch everything I eat. I have to eat 3 times a day just to take my medications. Am I obese?? I am 5 foot 5 inches tall and weigh 128 lbs. You do the math. I'm not sitting on my butt eating bonbons and ice cream whining about much pain I'm in, I dare say though, I could be easily enough. I just have God's grace to be smarter than that! Would I give up my handicapped spot because of someone like Marise Myrand? NO! If I lived in the building first, I should have the right to the spot. When I can no longer make use of my car, or when I move out, or am found dead, then by all means, let her have it. I feel badly for the lady who had the spot to begin with. Sympathize with Marise Myrand? Never! Hopefully her ignorance stays in Quebec and isn't contagious. This reeks of the woman who sued a store for tripping over her own child! Anything for a buck even if it makes someone else's life miserable! I also have to agree that perhaps this person should have to have to take a road test again just to see how safe she actually IS on the road.

What I want to know is, what happened to the lady who had the spot originally? Where's she going to park now? How about some sympathy for her? This woman seems to be thinking only of herself.

If only we could put all our energy towards the betterment of life for all as opposed to cuases we deem unworthy. Can you imagine the difference we could make?

I agree with dilliott,r comment
obesity is something that we get to be. We don't choose to be in a wheel chair.
Handy capped spaces are a huge problem in this word today. Many people put them selves in there place when there to lazy to walk.People should be very thankful to be able to walk..To many things at our finger tips it's making us lazy and for then were putting on weight far to fast.Do your self a favor park at the back of the lot and walk up to the stores.

The Bible says 'Judge not that ye be not judged'. Obesity is an illness, either by overeating due to personal or mental problems, ie. loneliness, or caused by genetics. Who are we to judge what caused her obesity? Our Christian duty is to find a solution to her parking problem and another solution to the parking problems of the sixty year old.

This issue is quite complex and I am not saying that I know the whole story and history of Marise's medical condition. However, some of the information being put out here is not entirely accurate. In particular, I would like to comment on people saying that her condition could be the result of hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). As a dietician, I am actually quite annoyed when people use hypothyroidism as an excuse to gain weight. An under active thyroid will slow your metabolism down and may cause you to gain some weight but it will not be the main cause in making an individual morbidly obese. There are some (very rare) genetic diseases that can cause morbid obesity, but it was not mentioned if she had one. I am not trying be heartless, however the reality is that in this country we have an obesity epidemic and the MAIN cause of obesity is still due to poor lifestyle choices. Now some will argue that we live in an obisegenic environment (with poor food availability and convenience products to ensure we never need to be active), however at what point do we start to focus on the individual and their daily choices? I am not trying to say it's an easy road, but some accountability is necessary before change can take full effect and improvements can be seen.

I believe the board has made the appropriate decision. She needs to be treated for her disabilities and nothing more. The whys and how one gets there is not important, well it shouldn't be in this country, yet time and time again it is, especially when it comes to certain matters, relating to some addiction, like alcohol, drugs, but particularly food. Especially overeating and obesity. I suspect if her disabilties were as a result of her struggling from years of bulemia and anorexia and she was horribly underweight you/ society might have more compassion for her. That's certainly the sentiment that we see in TV commercials.
I have been Morbidly Obese, Anorexic and Bulemic and am now, for the past 3 years living in a normal sized body eating healthily. Society treats FAT PEOPLE awfully. It is no different than an alcoholic who can't get sobriety, that was me. Now that I 'got it', I am healthy and free of health complications.
Have some compassion people, is that not what you would want if you were sick? Or a family member?

The Human Rights Commission is obviously wrong here!!!. First of all should this woman be driving ??? If you need an oxygen bottle attached to you while your driving your obviously a very sick person now lets add your diabetes and your enormous weight.
That alone screams some form of problem that should not be on the road “ PERIOD”.
They also took away an assigned parking from a handicapped lady of 60 years old... Since then is that fair, when did the Commission have the stupidity rights to do that!! I truly feel that this woman is aloud a spot up closer but not if she put herself in that position and not at the expense of someone else. Handicapped spots truly are for people with serious problems and that is how it should be patrolled.
I would like to see her now having to change her tires constantly as they will all be flat and all the key marks and paint slogans on her car …. I wonder if it was worth it ?????
In the mean time the Fat lady can now sing !!!!

$10000 buys a lot of cheeseburgers.

the decision is not surprising. we are moving into a more socialist society across the provinces. diabetes 1 is a chronic disease, a disability not a handicap. there is a medical method to dealing with type 1, and unfortunately, not following the regime/advice to managing type 1, results in obesity, so ergo, self inflicted conditions is a handicap that society should take responsibility for? the commissiion should taken it one step further if they wanted to take care of her, they should have stipulated that she use the $10k for managing her type 1, including nutrition and exercise (thus reduction in weight), and stipulate she has X months to do it (obviously, the commission would go to Dr and ask for advise on how long it would take a person like her to get down to X lbs etc etc) and then match that time line with the availability of the closer parking spot. after that time line, she loses the parking space and goes back to her own space, so either she gets better and can walk that distance or looks herself in the mirror and says i lost the space because i didn't put the effort in.. either way it places the burden of success on her.

Boy so many of u people talk a lot and say very little. If she cant walk or move around very well how the hell is she driving, Let her take para transpo and she will never have another problem, besides they are trained to help people who have challenges.

If I stopped showering.... would I get special treatment? My own spot? My own elevator? People who are morbidly obese have an eating disorder. They have let themselves go and it is for us to dance around the issue.

Ever sit next to a 300lber on an airplane? You won't feel sorry for them. You feel sorry for yourself. Being dangerously and ridiculously fat is not a handicap. It is a character flaw. Time to start giving special treatment to anyone with any disorder.

Common sense must prevail.

After having read the article, I think this whole thing is unjust. It's not a case of discrimination, it's a case of theft via the quasi-legal human rights commission. The obese woman has used this tool to steal the spot which was already assigned to another woman. The condo board told the obese woman to ask the current spot owner, who refused. So how is this a case of discrimination? The board attempted to accomodate her, and could not. So now she uses the commission to take what she couldn't have. Sounds like legalized extortion to me. The true injustice has been perpetrated on the poor woman in her 60's who has had her spot stolen from her by this abuser of society.

Both parties lack insight. If the woman is in a wheelchair and is on oxygen, would it not follow she would be issued a wheelchair accessible card from the licensing authority for motor vehicles? The Condo Corp. should have a number of designated handicapped parking spaces available. These spaces are assigned by need, not wether a person is self destructive, or ill. Find a solution, don't critizise if you cannot contribute to a solution!!!!

Does Canada have idiots as members on the human rights comm. ? If they wanted to do this lady a favour they should have asked to have her drivers licence suspended. She can't walk an extra twenty feet from her old parking spot VS the new one.. Can she use her feet in the crowded car to push the brake pedal, can she untangle her self from oxygen lines when driving??? this lady is ready to cause an accident and possibly kill somebody. Vision ---a child mistakenly runs on the road. As far as i'm concerned if she hasn't the capability to walk the extra 20 ft and has to be in a wheel chair because of obesity she is unsafe to drive a car---maybe this is what the condo corp tried to tell her and the idiots filed discrimination. I think they should be sued for encouraging an unsafe driver to be road worthy.

I tire of smug "healthy " people ragging on the obese. The woman has diabetes and has respiratory problems. those are both huge health issues. How she got there is of little use to argue over now. We need to educate the public. Who is to say why or how she got there. I am all for people taking responsibility for their own health. She is obviously trying to live an independant life style, as she is still driving a vehicle.
When we step in and discriminate on the basis of "she din't take care of herself" or she made her own choices-we sound like the American insurance companies who won't cover people with preexisting conditions.
" But for the grace of God go I..."
It could be you or your loved one-someday in this position.
I think she deserved to win the case. Some special considerations for someone who is attempting to retain their independence is the "Human" thing to do.

-Agree that peole make poor health choices in many ways, with obesity being only one, albeit a big one. Thinking about the burden on the healthcare system for many things (gang-related stabbings, shootings, or the effects of drunk driving, and poor driving habits in general, a lifetime of care for brain injury due to not wearing that $40 helmet, etc. ) are things that I hate seeing my hard-earned $$$ pay for. However, in this case the individual may have an illness that will not be reversed. Soon circulatory problems will worsen her conditon, and may result in limb loss, etc. I am sure she wishes things were different. Personally I would rather let her have the close parking spot and be happy that walking from a further stall is an inconvenience, and not a necessity due to poor health. It is true what they say - if you don't have your health you've got nothing.

I am sickened with the lack of compassion I am reading. How do you know how she gained her weight. How dare you judge. She may have a thyroid condition, or for that matter why should it make a difference. My God, are you the same people who would divorce a spouse for putting on pounds? What if this was your mother? I really hope that one day you don't find yourselves in a position that requires outside assistance, because there may be no one who gives a shit!

Morbidly obese, over weight, the article never does say by how much. It also asks if we would be so quick to judge a person with smoking induced lung cancer, I do. You know the dangers & put others at risk with your choices wheather it be food, drink, smoke or drugs why should my tax dollars be spent on helping these people. We need help for my 4 year old son diagnosed with ASD (from birth) & we are fighting a battle with government & social red tape. Those who make life altering choices should bear the burden of its concequences.. I am not including those of a medical definition. Some people are obses due to hyper thyroid or other forms of the bodies unablitiy to break down foods. There are other treatments. Same for those who may have lung cancer due to their profession, (fireman). For all the others I am sick of the "feel sorry for me mentality" The awarded $10000.00 should have been paid in the form of treatment for this persons obesity. This would not only benefit her but the health system also. I'm sure that Marise does not enjoy her life as on obese person. The only thing I am sorry for is that she does not have the inner strength to help herself, she expects US, ( society) to do it for her. We are actually hurting her more.

Hypothyroidism, PCOS, astrocytoma, sarcoidosis, depression, liver failure, kidney failure, certain brain tumous, Cushing's syndrome, hypoglycemia, congenital heart defects, pancreatic islet cell tumours, medications to treat MS and other diseases...a small sampling of over 300 diseases/conditions that cause weight gain or obesity.

I'm shocked at the number of ignorant bigots who have commented on this issue. Mind you, most of their comments aren't even spelled correctly, clearly demonstrating their level of education. (it's "disease" not "decease")

I had cancer and was sick in bed for almost 2 years while undergoing four major surgeries. I gained 50 pounds after going from an active lifestyle to not being able to walk from the bed to the bathroom without assistance. A year after recovery I am still having trouble getting the weight off. I must deserve it, I guess I asked for cancer and brought it on myself.

Give your head a shake! You obviously don't have a clue. You certainly can't even begin to guess what a stranger has been through in their life, let alone their medical history.

It's so easy to write down whatever you like when people can't put a face behind it. Essentially people who are making rude, negative and unsupportive comments towards this lady would not be so mean to a person in their face . Why is it so easy to judge someone without knowing exactly what the issue is. We can only feel compassion to women who are pregnant and have children. Lugging newborns with a strollerstroller or being pregnant has awarded women the second parking spot after the handicapped parking. If I posed this question to you; who should get the closer spot, even it is was by just one spot; the lady who just had a baby, or the lady in the wheelchair relying on the oxygen mask...what would you say? I am not saying we shouldn't be compassionate to either, I am saying that we do not know if a person's obesity was a result of being in a wheelchair because her level of activity has decreased. She needs food to live but is unable to move, how is she going to walk or exercise if she is in a wheelchair and using an oxygen mask? Stop using degrading words to describe a person. Why bother hurting someone even further when they haven't done anything to you? It's only a parking spot for goodness sake and look at all the mean comments it has created...let it go. It's not like all the obese people in the world want a handicap spot, or are you narrowminded enough to really believe that? This lady was rewarded $10,000, which was probably close to the cost of the spot she wanted in ther first place that she was willing to pay plus some punative damages; don't take everything so literally. Think things through before you comment on something you don't know anything about....please.

Do you think the Quebec Human Rights Commission ruled correctly in this case?

ok this was the question asked , not for everyone's opinions on the women. My posting would be a mile long if I were to get into that.

AS for if the commission ruled correctly, I would have to say NO. For one it is up to the person who owns the space to give it up or not, and it only states in the story that the obese woman was given a better spot , not that of the women who was asked to give up her spot.

The commission should have looked further into the issue with having doctor's reports, (having them to be given up by a judges orders), and decided on the fact that 10,000 dollars could have been put to better use in paying to have the woman's health issues looked after. By this I mean, a proper dietician for her and once she was able to lose some of the weight and breath properly, a professional trainer to help her turn it into muscle.

As posted by "Shannon", yes I can understand how people are when they see people that do not look "normal" in the eyes of others. I congratulate you on taking care of your health. However I disagree with your comment on how the world is at endtimes and has lack of compassion. I see compassion on a daily regular basis and please BELIEVE that there are still people out there that care and do things everyday to help others. They DO NOT get paid for it they do it out of the compassion in their hearts. AS SHOULD HAVE THE COMMISSION. Giving the obese woman the money for her to do with as she likes is not the answer, helping to pay for her to get to a better health condition would have made a lot more sense.

NO the commission did not make the right decision.

I believe the Quebec Human Rights Commission ruled correctly. Society today is far too judgemental of others, and it is about time that we all show a little more compassion and love toward our fellow human beings. We all have troubles and bad habits in response to life's hardships; supporting each other makes the world a kinder, more positive place. No one is perfect, and yet we all seem to think somehow that we are better than our neighbours. I am glad that a decision was made to make that woman's life a little bit easier! She undoubtedly encounters cruelty from others every day of her life, and this is wrong.

unfortunately this will set a precedence stating that this kind of behaviour is acceptable and its ok to make bad choices in you're life. Yes the woman should porbably get a handicapped parking spot because of her condition now. It illustrates how our society is too lenient and far too tolerant of bad behaviour

unless your a registered and trained Doctor in a medical field that deals with the issues that this lady has then and only then can you state or give medical advice on her health. there are many reason as to why one gains weight and why one becomes diabetic skinny people are diabetics skinny people are in a wheel chair and on oxygen. she did not ask for the space because she is over weight it is because of the wheel chair and the oxygen tank. But because people who are untrained feel they are qualified to diagnose and give an opinion have blown this right out of the water and focused on the weight issue. And i know this first hand for i am obese myself due to a handicap that i know have to live with for the rest of my life that leaves me bed ridden and not so easy to not eat when one needs food to live. no one can live on less then 1100 cals a day it is medically proven and weigh gain and weight loss is all about cals in and cals out but one can not not eat or eat less then the body organs needs to function or one brings on new health issue. know given the human rights and the medical team involved making the decisions has all the facts. gives no one the right to belittle this women we all have a right to our opinion but if it is morally threatening and belittling of another human being it should be kept to ones self. and i can a sure you that one day these people will be in the same pot weather weight or other health issues and they will be the first at yell and screen they are being discriminated upon. until one walks a mile in the others shoes one should not cast a stone.

She may have developed Type 1 diabeties due to heredity...we don't know...but I do not believe that obese people should get special privileges, like parking, special seating on public transport, etc. I feel the same way about gambling, alcoholism and any number of self inflicted addictions. Where do you draw the line...

We don't know what caused this woman to be overweight, although it is extremely rare that someone as seemingly large as this woman is obese due to genetic factors rather than lifestyle choices. What I find interesting is that someone else in her condo organization is going to be 'bumped' out of their spot, what about their rights? With the Supreme Court of Canada's ruling last year forcing any airlines flying in Canada to offer obese people an extra seat at no charge, thus passing the cost on to the rest of us, you have to wonder if we are not rewarding behavior that causes this country's number one health problem. They always said: "The meek shall inherit the earth".

It is sad to think that in order for someone to get a handicapped parking spot (for legitimite issues that make it difficult to walk long distances), they should have to explain, rationalize or justify the cause and extent of their disability. As stated in previous postings here, Do you want someone to have to put on their car, I have a lung disorder from smoking for years and that is why I need to use this special spot? Morbid Obesity is a disease. It is not just a "ate too many cookies" disease. It is a metabolic disorder. People can become obese for a number of reasons such as inactivity following an injury or accident and a medication side effect. A lot of you posted very judgemental, hurful comments that really are not relevent here. This woman for whatever personal reason has a number of medical conditions that restrict her ability to walk long distances, therefore she is asking for accommodation for a handicapped spot. How would you feel if this woman was family member? Lets show show compassion to those who need help staying connected to their community. Let's help them with their mobility needs.

Of course the court was wrong. Smokers and morbidly obese should not be supported by the rest of us. With all the information available today, anybody who makes these choices should also pay for any and all medical bills they get, no free healthcare. After all, healcare isn't free WE PAY FOR IT!!! These 2 groups should also be put at the bottom or removed altogether from organ transplant lists or major surgeries. Good people die these idiots hog the operating rooms.

Obesity is something you bring on yourself, so is lung cancer caused by smoking, these two examples should never be used in the same context as losing a limb in a car accident, a car accident is not something you chose to do. I have no sympathy for this woman and I think the ruling is wrong. If I had the closer parking spot I would've refused to give it up as well, not because I am lazy but because I think Myrand does not deserve it. If she was born with a medical condition or born with a handicap or became disabled due to an accident then yes I would absolutely give up a closer parking spot, but, obesity is something you bring on yourself with poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The lady should be given back her parking spot and the $10,000 should go back to the condo board, Myrand deserves non of it. She should feel ashamed, it is nobody's fault that she is the way she is but her own.

why is that most seem to assume that this lady is obese due to simply overeating without considering if she suffers from mental or physical disease that may be causing her obesity.
She obviously suffers from a handicap how she became handicapped is no ones else's business, would you expect someone who became handicapped due to speeding in a motor vehicle, playing contact sports or jay walking to be denied as well??
shame on you.

obesity is not a decease it is personal choice. No one should have to accomodate someone who stuffs their face with food, vegetates on a couch, and then cries foul when someone doesn't go "poor you, let me inconvenience someone else because you are so fat."
My message to Marise the massive - don't bump someone else out of their spot and waddle a little farther to get to the door. You need the exercise.

To TOMO. She has these problems because she is FAT. Her fault, her problem. No special places for her. Only in Quebec.

They are wrong. Fat people should not be rewarded for their over eating and lack of exercise by being given special parking spaces.
As a matter of fact they should be given the parking space farthest away so they can walk off the extra weight.

although it is difficult to empathize with an individual who has essentially ate her way to disability, I do believe it is a food addiction and we should be more supportive and understanding. That said, obesity is a huge public health issue and it will soon bankrupt our health system if we dont' do something as a society to combat the problem.

I am an authentic handicapped person, who finds it difficult to impossible to get an electric cart at the store, Why ?......because all the overweight people use them. They also wreck the catrs due to their excess weight.

I also live in a building where a non handicapped, non driving person has a handicapped space that she will not give up to those who are in genuine need of it.

This woman should NOT have been given that spot if she has NOT been classified as handicapped by her Provionce.

I'm glad this woman got a handicapped-spot. Anyone who requires the use of a wheelchair to get around (not to mention an oxygen-tank simply to breath), deserves it IMO. I highly-doubt she asked for the medical problems she has. I know that there are many others who suffer from this (and other diseases), who's lives changed dramatically upon diagnosis of a life-altering condition. The condo-board had no right to refuse her. The fact that so-many people have posted scathing remarks in reference to her appearance and medical-condition, is proof that our world is in end-times. Lack of compassion (and discrimmination) towards people with medical conditions is nothing new and has been around for years. Sadly, it seems to be getting worse. No one asks to get sick. You can take all the precautions to want; but at some point, someone who is perfectly healthy gets dealt with an illness/injury that they never fully recover from. Ask a friend of mine; who was almost paralyzed in her legs, from an allergic-reaction to a flu-shot. After almost a year of therapy, meds and phisio; she's up and around (although she still has chronic-numbness in her toes).

If the condo deed reads the specific or alloted parking space comes with the condo, you cannot give it up, or even have it removed from you, its part of the property you own, you may lend or rent it to someone, but you may not sell it without the condo. We live in a condo where only four units are involved, this is the set up we have, four garages and four parking spots. Not knowing what the situation is with the recent Quebec Human Rights case, but it seems if someone did their homework they would be up to code on the parking allotments and deeds. I have a handicap parking card, I will always have one, I was once told,"you don't look handicapped", I said, what does a handicap person suppose to look like?, all I got was a disrtaught look, no words forthcoming.

I think they ruled correctly. How the lady got where she is is not the question; there is no use in laying blame. The question is whether she was discriminated against, and as a formerly fat person I can tell you that people treated me a lot differently when I weighed 250 lbs vs. 130 lbs, even though I didn't change inside at all.

The issues of obesity and the health issue it poses for our fellow humans is not a moral one, but one of compassion. If the woman is eating herself to death, literally, then she probably has much more serious issues than I can appreciate without talking to her. I'm not going to be the one to cast a stone in my glass house.

In some morbidly obese "cases" not all of our issues are due to laziness.

I was sexually assaulted at 14. My abuser threatened my family’s safety, “If you tell, I will kill your family.” I immediately started putting on weight. I have tried many times to shed the weight and a bunch of times I was successful. However, men began looking at me, not in an abusive way, but as a sexually attractive woman. I could not handle it. And I began to gain weight again.

So, we’ve got all of that; throw in a couple of mental illnesses, bipolar and borderline personality disorder, plus neuropathy in both legs. The neuropathy has affected my lower legs to such a degree, that I broke the big toe on my right foot twice and I didn’t know it. And I have rebroken at least once more.

If you were to literally, take a white hot metal rod, pound it into your feet, and keep pounding until it was all of the way up your leg, and kept doing it repeatedly, that is what my feet and legs feel like on a bad day. On those days, I limit my fluid intake so I don’t have to keep getting up to pee.

So, in some morbidly obese "cases" not all of our issues are due to laziness.

Nobody is forced to eat and become obese right? then it's their own choice and has to live with it. Instead of buying her a new parking spot why don't they buy her a gym pass? I know she is in a wheel chair but i go to the gym and a man with one leg is in a wheel chair and i see him there all the time. Time to get off the couch or put the fork down and go for a walk! everybody can do that much.

It is sad that there is so little compassion left in the world today. Obesity can be an illness and is often not something a person can control. I have a friend who due to a medical condition was required to take steroids. She put on a significant amount of weight during that time and was often hurt by the disrespectful treatment she received by people who were not aware of her situation. It saddens me that we are all so judgemental and hard. It makes me wonder where we are headed.

Yes, They ruled right. They ruled. meaning they deliberated and their decision should be honoured and this poor woman should not be subject to further discussion.
