News: Study links frequent dental x-rays to brain tumour

New research from Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society has found that receiving frequent dental x-rays may increase your risk of developing meningioma—the most commonly diagnosed brain tumour in the U.S.

Dental x-rays emit ionizing radiation which is an environmental risk factor for developing meningioma (a common, but usually nn-cancerous brain tumour), reports Science Daily. Researchers of the study did note that while today's dental x-rays do not expose patients to as much radiation as they did in the past, more awareness is needed regarding the optimal use of dental x-rays.

The Canadian Dental Association has responded to the study's findings saying that they simply underscore a decreasing and already well-known risk associated with dental x-rays.

Do you get dental x-rays on a yearly basis?

Nice articles about health. Keep it up

I don't need a bloody x-ray once every year or so. Dentists get paid more to take x-rays and are abusing it. I now tell them to use the last one they had and only allow it once every 3 years. I go to the dentist twice a year, have excellent teeth, and he can see my teeth for himself...not that much changes and multiple x-rays aren't warranted even for the worst of mouthes. If your dentist doesn't like it, tell him you'll go elsewhere and make sure you follow through if needed. In excess, these x-rays are all about the money.

At least they know the problem exists. Dental was always tricky for most in the world and it shows in the smile if possible from dentures and better and less expensive implants to well repaired or prestine smiles of all kinds.

At least they said the x-rays today are far less but only if your dentist has a digital x-ray machine. If you go to a new dentist you'll have to get it done the only way you can minimize the frequency is if you routinely go to the dentist and they see that track history shows that you won't need as many. Those of you that come and go to the dentist will need a x-ray every time or else your putting your health in danger. There are far worse things that can happen if missed. I notice the article doesn't touch on this.

This post completely turned around what the article stated.
"Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society said, "We need more data before we can even begin to state there is a relationship between dental x-rays and these tumors" and yet this post says that there is a link. This was a very informal research study that based their finding on the clients memories and not on actual dental charts. Please do everyone a favor and stop trying to scare people away from having dental x-rays taken when they're needed.
