News: Study finds three things you must do if you want to lose weight
News: Study finds three things you must do if you want to lose weight

Studies have suggested everything from the obvious (eat healthily and exercise) to the ridiculous (fasting and fad diets) to lose weight. But according to a new study, three simple behaviours will take weight loss to the next level.

The study, published in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, examined the effects of self-monitoring, diet-related behaviour and meal patterns on weight change.

They found that women who kept food journals consistently lost 6 pounds more than those who didn’t, that when women skipped meals they lost 8 fewer pounds than those who didn’t, and that women who ate out for lunch at least weekly lost 5 fewer pounds than those who ate out less frequently.

Basically, making simple tweaks to behaviour could make a 20 pound difference to weight.

The most important thing of all?

"For individuals who are trying to lose weight, the No. 1 piece of advice based on these study results would be to keep a food journal to help meet daily calorie goals,” said Anne McTiernan, the study’s  lead researcher, director of the Hutchinson Center's Prevention Center and a member of its Public Health Sciences Division. “It is difficult to make changes to your diet when you are not paying close attention to what you are eating,"

For me, keeping a food journal and not skipping meals would be the easiest—I always have snacks, pens and paper on hand. But not going out for lunch? There are too many delicious (and healthy) options near my office to forgo that indulgence. Maybe I’ll change my mind when the harsh winter weather arrives!

What do you think? Would you keep a food journal, ensure you don’t skip meals and avoid going out for lunch to lose weight?

the other two are: not skipping meals and not eating out at lunch, bring your own

I was just wondering what the other 2 things are. I read this article because it said the top 3 things you can do to lose wait and all the article says is 1. Keep a food journal.

I understand the comments about losing weight and they are probably correct, however, why is just women that are monitored? Men need encouragement and guidelines as well.

Could you please send me a link.I cannot print the journal.Thank you in advance.Pat

Well let's see.. dear food diary after paying rent and bills i'm again left with under $100 for the month to buy groceries for the entire month, so again it will just be a sandwich.

Don't think I care to be reminded daily that I've very little to eat as it is. Rather do things like this on my own without diets/fads... whether excercise or food fad.

Fasting is one of the healthiest things you can do to your body, period. Humans have been fasting since inception, we didn't always have convenience, sometimes we went a day without eating, or two, or three. Now I don't think fasting for more than 24 hours is beneficial, but anything under 24 hours is enough to reap the huge benefits of fasting without the negatives, which there really is only one, and that is losing muscle, which actually takes 48 hours without any food before your body resorts to using muscle as energy. Again, fasting isn't a DIET. Do your research. And why doesn't this "ridiculous" article mention calorie deficit? There is only one thing to know to lose weight, and that is your ideal calorie deficit. The journals and food plan and exercise plan all come after that.

I'm in the process of losing weight and always keep a food journal. When you make up your menu plan ahead of time, it prevents overeating and you can easily see how many calories you are consuming. I also use a kitchen scale, measuring cups and measuring spoons and weigh and measure out my portions. Often what a serving is and what one thinks it is are two completely different things.

Three things to control weight:

1. cut out sugar
2. cut out all processed foods containing MSG, nitrites, sulphites, canola/palm oils
3. cut out all fatty foods except those with 'good fats' (EPA,DHA,EFA essential fatty acids from fish etc)

Minimum one half hr. of walking per day PER DAY

IF you don't do this you WILL DIE of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other associated disorders for sure.

Don't just LOSE weight (which can involve losing water and muscle from fasting and foolish fad diets), but gain lean muscle. Muscle will itself burn calories and reduce FAT around the waist, rear end, back of arms and hips ... FAT which contains TOXINS which will KILL you.

When you detox, ALWAYS use citrun pectin (pectosol) to exit the toxins from the system. If you don't do this AND EVERYTHING ABOVE, YOU WILL DIE FOR SURE.

Losing 'weight' is serious and is a matter of LIFE or DEATH.. BEGIN NOW!!!!

Life is far to hectic already! Now we can't just make healthy food choices, we have to journal it? PLEASE!!!! Enough on this subject! These constant bombarding articles and the media bombarding Canadians about food and how we apparently don't know our own bodies, how we just don't do anything right about anything anymore - is creating the problem! STOP STRESSING OUT NOT ONLY ADULT CANADIANS, BUT SUSCEPTIBLE TEENS AND CHILDREN WITH ALL THIS SELF-IMAGE (under the context of Health) DEPLETION! JUST SHUT-UP ALREADY! Your "helpful" theories are just that "theories"! All to keep you getting paid for jibberish, keep healthcare costs grow; keep doctors, shrinks and the like all "worthy" for their pay. WE DID NOT JUST FALL OFF THE TURNIP TRUCK! We know that THE PROBLEM IS THE PATHETIC FOOD CHAIN THAT OUR CANADIAN GOVERNMENT ALLOWS! THIS IS WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING OF CANCER, ETC. WE ARE BEING POISONED BY OUR GOVERNMENT 'SELECTED' FOODS THAT HAVE LITTLE TO NO CRITERIA FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION! It's amazing what is allowed in our foods. READ YOUR LABELS and honestly, if you didn't freshly grow it, butcher it or know someone well who does, then don't eat it! Our food chain has been reduced to fillers, injected hormones, injected pesticides and other chemicals, such as dyes and colorings such as the highly carcinogenic 'Tartrazine' that is used in everything - even when it's not needed! Oh they will argue that the "ALLOWABLE" amount in a product is insignificant. BUT when it is in every single product on the shelves and you are consuming a large majority of them, now you have just exceeded the allowable amounts for consumption! Same with Processed Sugar, Glucose-Fructose, ASPARTAME and others, maggots, radioactive poisoned fish; Fillers such as burnt wood and shaved K3 Board!!
How about you actually put this in the right perspective and seriously start writing letters to your MP's, your MLA's your Health Ministers, FOOD MANUFACTURERS, even the Prime Minister about the POOR QUALITY of foods that we are feeding Canadians. How about pushing them for more funding to create ways for ALL Canadians to have access to 12 month Fresh Vegetable/Fruit Gardens? Everything should be LOCAL! We do not want rotten fish in the store poisoned in CHINA fish farms, then caught and shipped to Calgary, AB, rinsed off and packaged,
The fact is it is not the lack of exercise or the food choices we make - it is the fact that our food is purchased from across the ocean, from countries where Canadian Food and Drug finds it easier to turn a blind eye.
Time to open up on the real culprit of Depleting Health in our Country! It is a cooperation (conspiracy) of World Wide Governments & Trade, Medical Health Officers and the Heads of Food Manufacturing & Producers to basically keep their costs down, but drive up consumer costs, in a pathetic attempt to hopefully cover the health costs of people succumbing to the poor to no nutrition in the food that is supplied to Canadians and all people in the "wealthy" countries, while they spend billions sending the same crap to other countries in severe need or after a disaster! It all about i m a g e and m o n e y for the conspirators!

Just another blah...blah... blah about losing weight , One size does not fit all!

Here is the best way to lose weight. If you are hungry at mealtime, you will crave tasty foods, which usually are high in calories. Don't allow yourself to get hungry. Eat more often during a 24-hour period, maybe six or nine little snacks. Make sure the snacks are healthy, low calorie foods. If you don't allow yourself to reach the point of feeling hungry, it will be easy to simply eat these low calorie foods. Of course, we are all human, so treat yourself to a junk food meal once a week. Add to this, a moderate exercise program and very likely you will lose weight.

Losing weight is all about one calculation: burning more calories than you consume in a day. If you burn 100 calories more than you eat everyday, you don't have think about it or worry about it, you will lose weight over time.

I joined Weight Watchers and we track the food we eat everyday and so far I have lost 16 lbs.

Gee, I thought I already posted a comment about this blog and reason being, Why pictures of scales, there are people, lots of people out there with UNDERWEIGHT eating disorders!!!!!!!!!!!

Having lost 60+ pounds over the last year, I really believe in the food journal part. I don't exercise any more than I did before I started recording my food. Once you start writing down how much you eat, you realize you do eat a lot. I still eat anything I want, just in smaller amounts and the foods like cakes, cookies and chocolate bars less frequently. They're still there when I want them, but I take the time to look at what I've eaten to see if I can afford to have them.

It works.
