News: Is this new celeb health trend dangerous?
News: Is this new celeb health trend dangerous?

Most celebs are in amazing shape, but that doesn’t mean we should follow their advice—especially when it comes to our health.

In fact, some of the health decisions they make can be downright dangerous.

The latest trend, receiving vitamins through an intravenous drip, may sound harmless (it is vitamins, after all) but it can actually cause bruising, infection, vein inflammation and (in rare cases) sudden cardiac death.

Celebs like Rihanna, who tweeted a picture of an ‘IV vitamin drip’ in her arm last month, don’t seem to be heeding warnings from professionals.

"We are 'designed' to get nutrients through our GI tract; and absent a clear and compelling reason to do otherwise, that is how we should get them," Dr. David Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine told MSNBC. In other words, the best way to get vitamins is through your diet or an oral supplement.

So why are people injecting them?

According to CTV, people use it as a preventive measure against aging, or to improve performance at sports, or to create a greater sense of well being.

Personally, I think if you're living a healthy, active lifestyle you shouldn't need an injection to feel good. However, there are cases in which getting IV vitamins make sense.

A study in the Canadian Medical Journal showed that high-dose vitamin C, given by intravenous and oral routes, may improve symptoms and prolong life in patients with terminal cancer.

While I do think it’s important to make sure I’m getting the vitamins I need, doing it through an IV seems extreme—and not nearly as delicious or comforting as a home-cooked meal. That said, if I were sick, and it could improve my quality of life, I wouldn't hesitate to get a dose.

What do you think? Would you take a mega-dose of vitamins?

I have gotten a vitamIn IV once a week for the last three weeks I will get one more next week and the go to quarterly or every two months. I didn't know it was a celebrity trend my vitamin packs are made up just for me, based on blood tests to help boost my system. When my Dr first suggested it I thought it was crazy but when we evaluated my vitamin results it made more sense
Mine is administered in a medical office based off of my needs.
If celebs are doing this who cares you don't know their health history and medical needs

I think this article makes a huge assumption that the foods we eat actually have the level of vitamins needed for optimum health. Its pretty clear from how society looks that the answer is no. How does the GI tract react to that? So, maybe IV drips are a temporary solution to the major vitamin deficient foods we have until someone can come up with a feasible way we can eat more healthily and get the vitamins our bodies need. Organic just isn't cutting it. Maybe our bodies are adapting to less vitamins. There is becoming a huge market for liquid vitamins, as pills are not absorbed even half as much as we think. Something to think about...

vitamins are nothing to mess around about. It turns out all those years of the 'red meat is bad for you' in the 80's & 90's did a number on my system. I am B12 deficient. From all of my research, if left untreated, I could go into heart failure...from a missing vitamin in my system? There is such a thing as vitamin poisoning. Wake up, People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a shame that celebs get sucked into all these extreme forms of beauty/health treatments. Do they not realize that society views them as modern idols and will follow them like lost sheep to the point of imitating their every move? If they want to practice all these weird and life-threatening procedures, they should do it in private and not expose these weak-minded worshippers to their toxic life choices.

And just because Rihanna is rich and famous does not mean she is smart in the choices she makes. Look at her choices of men, for example.

Moderation seems to be the key. To me, high doses in one shot is the equivalent of digesting an entire bottle of 100 vitamin pills in one day. There are warnings on the label for what the recommended dose should be, but an allowance for a doctor's recommended dose. I know that daily doses of vitamin C need to be regulated as the body has limits with how much vitamin C it can digest. Once the limit has been exceeded, essentially anything less than the new level does the body no good.

Vitamin B in high doses for a period of time can be essential in assisting the body in 'recovering' from some ailments or assist with inefficiencies.

I haven't heard of any Vitamin B overdoses or related deaths.

as with anything .... moderation is the key .... and an over dose of certain vitamins can be just as serious as taking too much of anythign else ... the consequenses are not always as easly reversed ... know what you are doing when you do something like that

What ever happened to taking a daily multivitamin? I'm far too afraid of needles to get an IV for vitamins.

As a body builder I take vitamin supplements like a multi vitamin. I only take one maybe 2 to 3 times a week. My body gets plenty through my diet. I supplement protein every three hours because your body depletes its protein every three hours and what it doesnt use is "pees" out. The 'only' vitamin i take religiously is folic acid. It is the one vitamin that no matter how many vegetables you eat your body can not get enough of, it is a member of the B vitamins. B vitamins are water solluble and will not toxify your body. That is what I take and I would say any more, unless prescribed or your sick is excessive. The human anatomy, other than the anomaly of folic acid, is very fine tuned and efficient. The average more or less healthy person will do more harm than good to overload it. Similarily on the other side our bodies need so many grams of fat each day, but you wouldnt think of eating a dozen donuts every morning. Common sense rules the day. Lets don't forget Hollywood types like to go overboard on all their little whims. Eat healthy live long.

"most celebs are in amazing shape". Are you kidding me? Most celebrities are anorexic and unhealthy. Just because they are thin does not make them in good shape. It is unfortunate you continue to promote that type of unhealthy and unrealistic attitude. I would much rather be healthy with muscle than stick thin. Skinny fat is no healthier than obese fat.

IV's are for hospital use were they can be closely monitored or if you have a medical conditon where you have been trained to do it at home. If your diet isn;t totally great, you can get easily absorbed vitamins supplements that are absorbed through the GI tract like they should be. Be sure to investigat the supplement you take to make sure it is good for you. And I bet the oral supplements are a lot cheaper than IV!
