News: Can running shorten your life?

It can help you lose weight and de-stress, but according to a new study, running can also shorten your life.

The study, reports the Wall Street Journal, will be published in the British journal Heart, and shows that running can be more detrimental than beneficial for heart health.

According to the study, "Running too fast, too far and for too many years may speed one's progress toward the finish line of life.”

Before you stash your running shoes for good though, keep in mind that (like most things related to health) moderation is key.

While the study found that those who run 20 to 25 miles per week have no advantage over non-runners, they also found that those who run less, and slower, do have a lower death rate.

Casual running can keep you healthy, and completing one marathon in your lifetime isn’t going to kill you. But, according to the editorial, "Chronic extreme exercise appears to cause excessive 'wear-and-tear' on the heart.”

In other words: Don’t sign up for a lifetime of marathons if your goal is longevity.

Totally agree!!! Be gentle to your body, especially with age!

You know what? I believe it could. Being fit is important but so is balance. Running oodles of miles, week after week, year after year, can put chronic stress on your systems, cardiovascular and endocrine to name a few. I'm someone who loves running and I've done long distance events - and I've recently had to cut back because of health concerns which are likely related to it. The headline is misleading as there is information in this article indicating running more moderately is actually beneficial.

Please. I don't believe a word of this nonsense. I have run in many marathons and, after my latest physical, my Doctor has told me my cardio - vascular system is excellent and I'm STILL running at 76 years old.

I bet you will state that bacon is bad, too.

i sure hope no one spent any money coming to this conclusion what a joke

you know what else will shorten your life? not exercising and being fat.... who even came up with this study? lemme guess, a fat scientist who will die at the age of 55 due to health reasons....
