After a week of cleaning, painting, moving and organizing, I was in desperate need a little R&R, so when I got an invite to preview Laya Spa and Yoga Lounge, a new Ayurveda health spa in Toronto’s west end, I didn’t hesitate to RSVP ‘yes!’ (It also helps that my new apartment is in aforementioned west end).

I went in feeling frazzled and came out feeling light, relaxed and groomed, thanks to a trio of women with ‘L’ names: An incredible hand massage from resident esthetician Leda Dedominici, perfect eyebrow threading from esthetician Leila and a restorative Bowen treatment (a therapy that helps reset the body's structure and energy) from certified Bowen therapist (and yoga instructor) Lily Eslahjou.

The food, provided by Torito Tapas Bar in Toronto’s Kensington Market, made me want to marry the chef. Dehydrated beets filled with raw chocolate ganache and a hint of chipotle were my favourite, but the raw spaghetti (made with zucchini and squash noodles) were a close second.

The relaxing environment didn’t hurt either. With stunning exposed brick walls, soothing music (coming from an honest-to-goodness sitar player) and the calming presence of beautiful owner Alessandra De Oliveira, it’s easy to forget the stress of daily life.

Though I just tried sample treatments, the quality and care taken by the staff will definitely have me coming back for more. I can’t wait to try a yoga session (with six people per class, it’s an intimate one) and Alessandra’s recommended treatments: The Shankara facial and of course, the Brazilian wax (she is native to Brazil, after all).
