Government should also make it manadatory to clearly list aperatame, MSG, GMOs (what genes were spliced into product and for what reason) and pesticides used on crops.
I think using coloured labels is an excellent idea and I can't imagine it would cost a great deal the health benifits would outweigh the cost as well as providing another way to eat healthy. this would be an easy system to follow for both adults and children.
yes they absolutely should!!
and this is also the food that we are feeding sick people in the hospital, processed, extremly HIGH sodium food!!
Some of the sodium content in preparet foods is way over the top and should carry warning labels.
I totally agree with informing consumers of risk of consumining too much salt.
It als be mandotory fo manufactures to add warning to these packages. They should also be forced to lower the amount of these kind of aditives that they are using in these processed foods
Yep..Like some of the cigar producers who puts warning labels in every packaging. I guess putting labels to food would somehow be better than having nothing at all.
I wholeheartly agree manufacturers should be forced to add cancer warnings to foods that contain too much salt. I would really like to see it happen.
I call shennaigans!! Salt (whether it be from the Sodium or Potassium) is a much needed mineral. There are some who of us who need more than others! Stomache Cancer NOW??? OMFG..Lets have a new survey...I will head this study and rake in millions to tell everyone Salt is a VERY much needed item in our Dietary needs;)
Yes I know the purists against Salt will say High Blood Pressure..BLAH BLAH.. To them all I can say is..NO ONE GETS OUT OF LIFE ALIVE!! We are all going to die:) Can't we even enjoy what we wish and enjoy this while living???
Maybe Studies should worry more about racisim, wars, than a mineral that most of us enjoy :)
Oh, people! Do not believe this silliness about salt causing cancer. This is just more liberal crapola designed to control the minutest detail of our lives. The hucksters who push this psuedo-science on the public are busy-body liberals who will lie till they're blue in the face. Stop being hoodwinked by them! Do the research! They are lying.
How about they just reduce the salt drastically in everything. Does food really need that much salt?
Well, if it's that bad for our health then why doesn't the government make it mandatory?
i have been complaining for years of the amount of salt in prepared foods. no one seems to care about it. i have hypertension and stay away from salt. my husband has kidney disease and he also stays away from salt. when do people get a choice. we have the highest salt in our food than the u.s. please, give us a break.
No. Thats just stupid. Everyone knows too much salt is bad for you and those warnings will be as useless as those cigarette warnings to those who already smoke. when I used to smoke before I had a my son I didn't even bother with those warnings. You just become immune to them. My husband who still currently smokes ignores them as well. Its just a waste of time.
Most definitely there should be a labelling system and colour coding, in my mind, is the way to make consumers aware of the salt content. Red, high Yellow, Medium, Low, Green. Manufacturers won't want to do it because most people want to avoid high sodium content but are in too much of a hurry to read all the jargon to get to the information they want. Colour coding is not cost prohibitive for them to do and could be implemented almost immediately.
It's time the food industry start processing natural food instead of this highly fast grown unaturak whatever they call it. The time to go back instead of thinking about the almighty dollar is now.Grow up Producers and Processors.
I think we need to know more about phosphate salts found in "seasoned meats" sold in grocery stores. Are they safe to eat??
Maybe food producers should lessen the amount of sodium they hide in our food, oh yeah don't forget the sugar
The study is only an observational study, not a clinical study. The study shows only an association to a higher rate of stomach cancer but from this study it can not be said that higher salt intake is a cause of higher rates of stomach cancer. There could be many other factors that could be attributed to the higher cancer rates.
If you don't already read nutrition labels then you are the only one to blame for what you decide to buy. We all know adding warnings doesn't deter people from buying anything. I restrict how much salt I intake because of severe swelling but that doesn't always stop me from buying something I really shouldn't buy. I buy no-nos in moderation :)
Can't help but Laugh at the picture of the TV dinner in this article. The Tray holding the food will create many times higher risk of getting cancer than the salt in the food. Polycarbon leeches into the food as the plastic heats up while cooking even worse than the non stick coatings on pans.
Definitely there should be a Salt Rating on ALL food packaging/products. This is already in effect in the U.K. Their packaging also shows levels of fat content as well.
I wonder where the comments go?
If this is so true and of course I'm sure it is. Why do we not make it illegal to put it in our food. Of course the answer is in moderation, it's fine.... Well then stop telling me it's a deadly desease maker. Restrict the use of salt to minimum perserving and people will only use if needed but it's already the so we get a double dose. Circle effect or what.
cancer warnings should be added to hundreds of products as done in the uk
Well it seems everything either causes cancer or it prevents cancer. I suppose as long as the diet is properly balanced so is the risk and the prevention.
I have followed the salt debate for many-a-year. I don't understand why no one explores the role of the kidney to remove sodium cations from the blood. Healthy kidneys should take care of much of the sodium problem. However, I still believe moderation is sensible, but not to the point of villainizing salt.
The producers & manufactuers of all PROCESSED foods should not only be legislated to put cancer warning labels on their foods, but should also be legislated to lower the amount of salt used in procesing food. There is no valid reason for the amounts of salt that is used in these foods. I have not used salt in over 40 years, except I am battered every day with large amouts of salt added to bread, butter etc. We do not need all this salt!
Where's the research that says salt causes stomach cancer? Last I checked salt is not a carcinogen, so what is causing the cancer? Food additives and fluoride are the most likely culprits, but if the perception can be shifted to "salt" it protects those responsible. There's something funny about this article ... the false association of salt and cancer is interesting ... researching fluoride and stomach cancers will shed some light on this I think ... my 2 cents.
YES, I believe that would be helpful to some people - who haven't paid much attention to the health warnings of the past. The traffic light system would also make it a lot easier for children & seniors to understand than it has been - after all, people don't seem to count/watch every little gram of sodium that they consume on a daily bases - but, it all adds up - come the end of the day & they would be surprise to know. Some food manufacterers are also to blame for our over - consumption; they may have replaced the higher fats in our diets with more sodium; in an effort to make it taste more palitable. Why do we need/want sodium in cookies? I have read more than a few food labels like this & it's just NOT right!
Yes, they should be forced to add the warning. I'm sick and tired of them pumping all the foods with so much fat, sugar and salt. It's just not necessary. If they eliminate fat, they up the sugar and salt. If they eliminate the salt they up the fat. Why can't they make the food NORMAL??
Ummmmm. pretty much everything causes some kind of cancer, where yas been, but the buses and trucking company behind my house i suppose that stuff dont cause lung cancer eh. This world is just sickening anymore. Everyday they remind you that one way or another you are going to die, so i might as well eat some salt if i like it, if you live 30 / 60 / 90 years does it really matter either way it was way to short, enjoy your days people let it go bye bye
They shouldn't be allowed to sell high sodium foods like this.
Stop telling us what DOES cause cancer and start telling us what DOESN'T cause cancer.
Would you ALL give it a break !! Drinking milk causes death - the stats prove it !!
Stop with the everything causes death - so do guns, etc etc etc. Christ - give me a break and write about something that really matters about this world. And to those who are going to give a shot about guns - go home and have a beer. !!!!!
It is very truly that high intake of salt may lead to diseases including increased risk of cancer. That said, what the government and certainly the food industries do not tell people is that most cancer risk increases dramatically with intake of all animal foods. In other words, dairy, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are all loaded with carcinogens (cancer causing agents); the greater the intake of these animal derived foods, the greater the risk of getting active cancer cells in your body. If you are not convinced of this, please read T. Colin Campbell's "The China Study" -- it is one of the most powerful and significant long-term studies ever conducted on cancer research. By the way, even if you have already been diagnosed with cancer, switching to an all plant-based whole foods diet may actually help kill of cancer cells. The stronger your immune system, the less likely you will have "active" cancer cells. Best of good health to all who have read my message. (VeganRob, Ph.D.)
Yes, there should be some kind of warning on all foods high in salt to indicate high levels of salt. Something in red with the percentage of recommended daily dose like lots of food packaging in UK have.
