Beat the winter blahs with a window garden

Well, it’s the first day of winter and I’m bracing myself for the gray days ahead. If you’re like me and you live in an urban apartment, the view from your window is probably pretty dreary for most of the colder months. But two innovative women from Brooklyn, N.Y., have inspired me to green my pad with my very own window farm.

Scientists Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray have developed a method for planting a vertical veggie garden in their apartment by stringing up used water bottles on their windows. Now, through social networking, "window farmers" are cropping up (haha!) all over the world. Their idea is to inspire inner-city dwellers to grow their own food so that everyone, regardless of location and income, can have access to fresh and nutritious vegetables.

You can download instructions on how to build your own window farm from windowfarms.org then join the conversation at our.windowfarms.org, a social networking site where you can share tips, get great advice and find out what other window farmers are up to.
