Yes, I absolutely agree that eating disorders are "contagious". I think if you're prone to take things to extremes or if you have low self-esteem, you're more at-risk, But there's definitely a peer pressure element.
A good friend of mine battled with anorexia after moving to Israel as a teenager, where she found an extreme pressure to be super-skinny and look good in a bathing suit. Her social group was also more judgmental there than her friends here in Canada had been. Instead of hearing "you're beautiful just as you are", she heard a lot of "ew, you're so fat!" and sadly, she translated that in the wrong way.
