Sure, fruit contains sugar – but does that mean type 2 diabetics should steer clear of it?

Until now, the answer hadn’t been clear, but a new study published in Nutrition Journal shows that avoiding fruit doesn’t help reduce blood sugar.

In the study, overweight participants with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes were all given the same diet advice, but one group was randomly assigned to limit fruit intake, while the other group was told to eat at least two pieces of fruit a day.

"A recommendation to reduce fruit intake had no effect on blood glucose levels, weight loss or waist circumference," the study’s authors wrote.

Luckily for type 2 diabetics, this means fruit is still a great sweet snack option – especially because of its health benefits.

"Considering the many possible beneficial effects of fruit, we recommend that fruit intake should not be restricted,"
the study’s authors wrote.
