If you’re confused by conflicting health reports, you’ll be happy to hear that some health advice is universal.

A new study shows you can cut your risk for two of Canada’s biggest killers’heart disease and cancer’by following the same simple health rules.

The study, published in the journal Circulation, shows that the American Heart Association’s list of seven factors associated with a healthy heart can also cut cancer risk.

You probably already know the seven steps, considering the advice is quite common, but here’s a reminder:

Be physically active (Health Canada recommends 150 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per week).

Keep a healthy weight (According to Health Canada, a normal weight is a Body Mass Index of 18.5 to 24.9).

Eat a healthy diet

Maintain healthy cholesterol levels

Keep blood pressure down

Regulate blood sugar levels

Don’t smoke

‘Adherence to the seven ideal health metrics defined in the AHA 2020 goals is associated with lower cancer incidence,’ the study’s authors wrote.

So, there you have it: When in doubt about the healthiest course of action ‘ keep these seven steps in mind.
