Listen up! I just met with one of Canada’s premier makeup artists, David Goveia, and got a chance to plumb his vast knowledge and peek inside his artist’s makeup kit. I’m going to share a couple of tips with you right now.

Goveia, who is affiliated with The Artist Group Limited, has a preference for lip gloss or sheer lipstick in lighter tones on everyone. There are exceptions, of course, but to keep it simple, here’s what he suggests for achieving a sheer modern lip: With lips closed, pucker your mouth and dot or lightly smush your gloss onto the ‘inner square’ of your upper and lower lip, then quickly flick off any excess from the corners of your mouth with your fingers. (I personally recommend that you do this when no one can see you, and never in front of a date.)

Goveia feels anything burgundy-ish in an opaque texture is an old look, and will age you. His other tip: women worry way too much about dark circles and, in fact, it’s best to use concealer minimally. To ascertain how much concealer you need, it’s all about how you look in the compact mirror in your purse. Hold it straight ahead of you and slightly (just a little) above eye level. If you hold the mirror down and look down, all you will see is dark shadow.

Now, that didn’t cost you one cent, and you’re already on the road to keeping it chic. By the way, David is also a painter and you can see some of his artwork at www.johndandy.com.
