We know you want to look good in a swimsuit. But if you’re not wearing a suit that fits, then none of the squats in the world will save you. And if you’re not a fan of swimsuit shopping (that change room lighting isn’t the friendliest), then you’ll want to keep reading. We went straight to Mark Caskenette, managing director, Anita Canada, a swim and lingerie brand that specializes in fittings, to chat about how to make shopping for a swimsuit easier.

What kinds of bathing suits would you suggest for different body types?

“Personally, I’m not a huge fan of this type of swimsuit solution for body type. I think it stereotypes women and tries to put you into a box. We are really all different and should be free to wear what we feel comfortable wearing.”

That’s so liberating. So we have more choices than we thought.

“Ruching is flattering on all body types.”

So how do we know if a suit doesn’t fit properly?

“The underwire should fit right under the breasts. You should be able to bend forward and shake without anything falling out of place. The seams of the top shouldn’t dig into the breast, and there shouldn’t be any ‘spillage’ over top. The fabric should be smooth and it shouldn’t feel bulky. For the band, you should be able to slide your finger between the fabric and your skin. With a bikini top, the front and the back should be even on the front and the back. If it’s higher in the back, then your bikini top is too big. Your straps should be snug, but not tight. No red lines in the skin. For a one-piece suit or a tankini, make sure the fabric is smooth against the skin, not loose, wrinkly or riding up.”

How can you make sure in the change room that your top won’t fall off in the pool?

“Like lingerie, getting a proper fitting is critical to a good fitting swimsuit. Wardrobe failure shouldn’t be an option when a swimsuit has been properly fitted.”

At what bra size should we make sure that our swimsuit top has support?

“All sizes should be properly supported. Obviously, the fuller busted a woman is the more critical it is to have a bra-sized swimsuit. Not only for support, but for finding the perfectly flattering swimsuit. Most companies will start increasing depth of top at the B/C cup.”

What colour is the new black this season? What’s flattering?

“Navy is really a strong color in swimwear as well as deep red, following the denim and nautical trend. […] Women should celebrate their body and find a suit that complements and accentuates what they are looking for.”
