3 Topical Treatments You Need in Your Skin Care Routine

Retinol, resveratrol and idebenone pack a powerful punch when it comes to anti-aging. Here’s more on these topical treatments

Retinol

Most simply put, retinol is another name for vitamin A and works by stimulating the natural renewal process in skin cells, which slows as we age. It improves wrinkles caused by photo-aging and evens out skin tone and texture. Look for products that contain at least 0.5 percent retinol, then work up to one percent for best results, and use them only at night – protect skin during the day with an SPF 30 or higher because retinol sensitizes the skin. Laboratoire Dr Renaud is currently working on formulating retinal molecules, which are easier for our cells to turn into retinoic acid. Retinal will not only perform better than retinol but also be better suited to those with sensitive skin.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is an antioxidant found in the vines of grapes. When applied topically, it reduces cell damage, protects against the sun’s UV rays and improves collagen synthesis. Caudalie’s Resveratrol line takes things one step further by blending two microhyaluronic acid spheres with French vine resveratrol (shown to be the most potent form of the ingredient) so it can penetrate skin at its deepest level. “It will teach your skin to act young again,” says Berthelot, “instructing it to produce more hyaluronic acid and redensify the skin.”

Idebenone

This powerhouse works deep within skin to support its natural repair process and protect it from future environmental damage. Idebenone is such a potent antioxidant that it has been proven to be more effective than other select antioxidants, such as coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E. Elizabeth Arden’s exclusive Idebenone Ester technology is an advanced delivery system that provides a time-release reservoir of idebenone, allowing for more effective and gentle use, even for those with sensitive skin.
